Hampi is is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an ancient settlement situated on the banks of Tungabhadra River in northern Karnataka which is roughly 370 Kms from Hyderabad. Ancient texts describe the place as Kishkinda or Pampa- Kshetra ;the mythological name of Tungabhadra river and overtime the name of the place has come to be known as Hampi. The village stands within the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and is extremely significant in terms of Indian architecture. The place has number of Hindu and Buddhist Architectural sites with Vittala Temple, Virupaksha temple and Hampi Bazaar are a few important places to visit while planing a visit to Hampi. The ancient ruins of Hampi and Hippie town are super close and are separated by Tungabhadra River. Due to lack of time we were not able to visit the Hemakuta hills that has some Jain temples and sculpture of Lord Narsimha but is a great site to visit. The place is beautiful and a great weekend destination for those who seek solace from hustle and bustle of city life.
