a love letter to 90’s anime car culture and a meta-commentary on origin stories. | Check out 'Down Hill King' on Indiegogo.
I found this awesome ambitious project on Indiegogo today called Down Hill King which is creator Ben Leunato’s first comic book inspired by his love for 90s anime car culture. It’s more of a thriller though since there are horror elements.
Down Hill King follows the Japanese protagonist, Clint, a sort of hot headed guy, as he takes on a bet for money from another racer. Sadly, Clint’s race turns deadly, resulting in the death of all drivers, and Clint’s girlfriend. Only one person survives and that is Clint, however, the dead have not forgiven him for ending their lives.
So this seems like a fusion of fast and the furious or go speed racer go with a horror plot attached. The reason this comic caught my eye was the font and haunting image of a woman (Clint’s girlfriend I assume) with half her face ripped off. It reminded me of Naoki Urasawa’s Monster manga/anime and that alone made me hope for a psychological thriller, like that manga, for this comic.
The pages are out of order
The art style captures my eye and draws me deeper into the story. It sort of reminds me of some of Junji Ito’s drawings that have the same feeling/technique.
There’s not too many rewards on the indiegogo page, just a digital version of the book and a physical version for rewards.
Sadly, the project only has 3 days left and may not get enough funding in that amount of time. It breaks my heart because I can feel the love and passion the creator has for this comic. I just wish I had found this sooner to put the word about it out to everyone to hopefully help it become a success.
