The NGO-ization of resistance

NGOs have funds that can employ local people who might otherwise be activists in resistance movements, but now can feel they are doing some immediate, creative good (and earning a living while they’re at it).

In this neoliberal and neocolonial era, the structures of oppression have created new means of control, replete with benefits packages and a culture of material consumption. They have effectively enticed those previously vocal against injustice. They’ve muffled those resistance efforts. For others, the good life is as far away from the boardrooms, policy notes, and high-level offices as one can get, recognizing those are the sites of the new colonialism and lateral oppression.

The NGO-ization of politics threatens to turn resistance into a well-mannered, reasonable, salaried, 9-to-5 job. With a few perks thrown in. Real resistance has real consequences. And no salary.
