Congratulations to the Yurok Tribe’s Wellness Programming, one of this year’s six Honoring Nations Award finalists. Grounded in Yurok village values of reciprocal responsibility, the Yurok tribal court’s Wellness Programming is reclaiming its people - and its future. Operating in a PL-280 state, the court practices concurrent jurisdiction with the state of California and infuses traditional tribal values into contemporary jurisprudence to serve tribal citizens in culturally appropriate ways. We enjoyed hearing more from the Wellness Programming leaders and all our the 2018 finalists at the Honoring Nations Awards at National Congress of American Indians on Thursday, October 25th!

We send our congratulations to the Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Sitka ICWA Partnership, a finalist for the Honoring Nations Awards. Rooted in respect, communication, and an abiding commitment to the health and safety of children, the Sitka Tribe and the state of Alaska have reimagined conventional approaches to ICWA implementation through proactive engagement. Through systematic cross-pollination and joint case management, the Tribe and the State work together to heal and empower families. We enjoyed learning more about the Sitka ICWA Partnership when they shared their work on October 25th at the NCAI in Denver, CO for the 2018 Honoring Nations Awards.

Thank you to everyone who has helped get the word out about our series of incredible 2018 Honoring Nations Finalists! Today, we highlight the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma’s Quapaw Tribe Agricultural Programs, one of our six Honoring Nations Award finalists. The Agricultural Programs are a farm-to-table initiative that houses the first USDA-certified meat processing plant in Indian Country. Promoting healthy diets and job creation, the Agricultural Programs focus on sustainable and humane methods of breeding, raising, and processing livestock as well as planting and harvesting crops for the community. The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma shared their work on October 25th at the National Congress of American Indians in Denver, CO for the 2018 Honoring Nations Awards.

We would like to congratulate the Miami Tribe Of Oklahoma’s Myaamiaki Eemamwiciki Program, one of six 2018 Honoring Nations Award finalists. The Myaamiaki Eemamwiciki Program (the Miami Awakening) reincorporates the Myaamia culture and language into the community through curriculum, youth summer camps, cultural gatherings, publications, mobile cultural workshops, and other education programming. The Program focuses on communal ties and inclusivity to engage every citizen.

Congratulations to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium’s Health Aide Training Programs, one of the six 2018 Honoring Nations Award finalists. With 50 years of service to Alaska Native villages, the Health Aide Training Programs form the backbone of the Alaska Native health care system. Trained in community, dental, and behavioral health, the aides are an indispensable part of healthcare delivery and now practice in over 170 communities in rural Alaska and cities across the state. We enjoyed learning more from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium when they shared their work on October 25th at the National Congress of American Indians in Denver, CO for the 2018 Honoring Nations Awards.

Congratulations to the Native Village of Kotzebue’s Environmental Program, one of our six Honoring Nations Award finalists. The Environmental Program advances Village research priorities that meld Iñupiat traditional knowledge with western science, influences state and federal policy, and fully participates in the management of natural resources critical to protecting and sustaining their cultural, nutritional, and spiritual lifeways. We look forward to learning more from the Native Village of Kotzebue as they present at the National Congress of American Indians in Denver, CO for the 2018 Honoring Nations Awards.
