Next step in smartphone communication comes from ancient capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia
In 1324, Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which by the way, eventually became the Kingdom of Italy. In 2012, Cagliari is the capital of a region mainly known for its natural beauties, yet it is also advanced in the world of the internet. Beyond its bustling port and stunning Art Nouveau architecture, Cagliari is also home to Tiscali, a telecommunications innovator that is about to set up shop here in San Francisco...and may be changing the way you use your smartphone.
Allow me to digress for a moment for the sake of perspective.
Skype revolutionized voice calls by putting them on the internet. Video chatting services -- such as FaceTime, Google Hangouts, and again, Skype -- went further and allowed us to interact in real-time video online. That’s a wonderful step forward. Then, the innovative momentum shifted towards smartphone communication. Awesome apps, such as What’s App, began offering us global multimedia texting between smart phones, an innovation that marks a critical advancement in communications.
I can snap a smartphone picture of Alcatraz from my office window here at the consulate, and my friend in Rome can see it on his phone five seconds later. Wow.
So how does Tiscali play into this innovative atmosphere? I was particularly impressed by their application, indoona. This app bundles free voice calling, video chatting, multimedia messaging and geolocating all into one global, socially-activated application. Moreover, indoona builds your network directly from your phone’s contact list, so you can connect with the people that matter most to you. I doubt I am the only expatriate living in San Francisco that finds this appealing. Learn more in this video if indoona interest you.
What else? Tiscali is also contributing to the architectural grandeur of Cagliari with a modern flare. Check out their headquarters here. Beautiful, no? They have a thing for memorable corporate campuses: the Tiscali manager who will soon be working in San Francisco can see flamingos from his office window in Cagliari. Not bad!
What would you rather see out your window: Alcatraz or flamingos? Tough call...
Anyhow, keep an eye on Tiscali as a new entrant in the San Francisco high tech communications scene. Also, if you’d like to learn more about the rich history of Sardinia, start here!
