VR for robots
The intelligent folk at MIT have demonstrated how VR can be used to control industrial robots.
Researchers from the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) used an Oculus Rift headset, linked to a robot, which reportedly makes it possible for the user to see through the robot’s ‘eyes’.
To the user, controls appear in the VR experience, allowing them to adjust their movements as necessary.
CSAIL postdoctoral associate Jeffrey Lipton, said, ‘A system like this could eventually help humans supervise robots from a distance. By teleoperating robots from home, blue-collar workers would be able to tele-commute and benefit from the IT revolution just as white-collar workers do now.’
The CSAIL team initially tested the system by picking up screws, and so on, before upping the complexity and asking the users to move and stack boxes. The team hopes to extend the capability of the system to other VR and robotic technology.
