Projects - Shen Chao-Liang

We are currently proposing an exhibit of Taiwan-based photographer Shen Chao Liang works to museums, galleries, and collections. Shen is a proliferate artist. We have worked with him many times and want to introduce Western audiences to Shen and his work!

Shen received his master’s degree from the Graduate School of the Applied Media Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. His work is focused on social landscapes and imagery from daily life. One of his recent projects is - Photo One’19, presented by Asia Pacific Arlink Co., Ltd. Photo One’19 is a photography event providing platforms for young and professional artists to connect. The stage with colorful electric panels in the photo is one of the subjects of Shen’s published series, Stage.

The ISCA team organized his exhibit at the Dina Mitrani Gallery, Miami, focusing on his stage work (click the link to see more about the exhibit). This year, in addition to Stages, we are actively promoting two other compelling series: Singers & Stages, and Taiwanese Vaudeville Troops.

Cherry Creek Art Festival

The Cherry Creek Art Festival is an annual festival in Denver, Colorado. This year was the 28th! It was a three-day event, from Friday to Sunday during the week of Fourth of July. This was my first time attending this Cherry Creek Art Festival, and I spent a whole morning exploring it.  

I went to the event on Friday morning, so I wasn’t expecting there were many people there. But when I arrived around 10AM, many people were already there! That’s amazing!!

Around three hundred exhibiting artists were at the festival. Their works were all amazing! Anne Cubbage is one of the impressive artists. She uses every image in the book and hand-carved it. Each image is exactly where it was located in the book, but the layer makes them compose a complete scene.

In addition to these amazing artists and artworks, the Cherry Creek Art Festival offered other various events, such as music concerts and art experience. People could sign up an art class, and then drawing their paintings with others under the guild of instructor. I was trying to sign up the class, but unfortunately, it’s already full. 

Drawing together with these many people must be very interesting!

Of course, they had food trucks to feed people who were hungry after walking through all the booths.

Projects - Mural Commission Tofer Chin

We recently commissioned 2 artworks from Los Angeles based artist, Tofer Chin for one of our client’s New York City apartment. Tofer worked with us to create custom murals for their master and guest bedrooms. A mural can be an easy way to bring color and life to a room.  Tofer’s Southern California minimalist style with bold lines brings a bit of LA, where the client grew up, to NYC where he now resides with his wife and dog.

Tofer received his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design and has exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions in numerous countries including Australia, Germany, Spain, Brazil, China, United Arab Emirates and the United States. He has also produced public commissions in Brazil, Nicaragua, Japan and the United States.

Tofer Chin’s work ranges from paintings, sculpture, large-scale public murals and installations. He uses simple color and pattern to build abstract landscapes and creates a sense of calm in his work.  We recently visited Tofer’s studio nearly Los Angeles which he designed and built from the group up all lit with natural lighting.

Tofer’s most recent public commission, ‘Intentions’ is at LAX International Airport as part of the LAX Art Program.   The mission of the  is to enhance and humanize the travel experience by providing diverse and memorable art experiences throughout the airport. Presented in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)

Marie Watt is an American artist. She was born and raised in Seattle, and holds an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University. Watt describes herself as “half Cowboy and half Indian” due to her family background, that her mother is from the Seneca Nation and her father’s family were Wyoming ranchers.

“Watt believes that blankets provide access to social connections, historical traditions, and cross-cultural meanings.” - Rock Hushka, Chief Curator, Tacoma Art Museum

The blanket project is one of her well-known works, and which is inspired by the tradition of her tribe. Watt is an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. In her tribe, blankets are given away to honor those who are witness to important life events. Seeing blankets as mediums of personal histories, memories, and stories, Watt collected various blankets from people and encouraged people to share their stories and write down on the tags.

Marie Watt was an artist-in-residence at the Denver Art Museum in 2013. During her residency with the museum, Watt created a blanket project with the Denver community. She worked with the museum to collect blankets donated by the community. They received many blankets and quilts from an army blanket to a 30-year-old quilt. Each blanket had its special tag that told its provenance and the story. Watt piled these blankets up and displayed at the museum as a permanent exhibition. Though it is not on display due to the current reconstruction of the museum, it would be displayed in the future.

The artist for this week is a Taiwanese indigenous artist - Etan Pavavalung. Etan was born in Davalan Tribe, Sandimen, Pingtung County and has created various types of artworks, including poetry, prose, reportage, painting, print, carving, advertisement design, installation, and documentation. Like many contemporary indigenous artists, Etan hopes their traditional cultures can be seen, and he also concerns about how to make their culture visible to connect with contemporary society.

“Trace, Layer, Carve, Paint” is an art style created by Etan. This art style integrates the Paiwan culture into the contemporary context. In Paiwan language, “vecik” is their term similar to the meaning of “writing.” It refers to symbols, embroidery, and engraving, and it traditionally would be used on the daily-used ornaments, utensils, and clothing. Etan created this style after witnessing the reconstruction of many indigenous communities after a natural disaster by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. He felt that these communities would need to create a form of “modern writing” to rebuild everyday tribal aesthetics. Since then, Etan has been integrating his Paiwan background into the visual art form of “trace, layer, carve, paint.”

The following shows the creative process when Etan is carving on wood. I felt pretty relaxed by seeing him carving and coloring the wood. After experiencing the natural disaster, Etan has delivered his awareness of reconstructing the broken connection between the environment and human beings through his artworks.

Maybe it is because I’m an anthropology student and am always curious about different cosmologies of understanding this world, every time looking at an artwork, especially an indigenous and contemporary indigenous artwork, I am learning a new perspective to see and understand the world. Currently living in and working in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Martiny studied at the School of the Visual Arts, the Art Students League in New York, New York University and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He worked for ad agencies as a Creative Director for more than 25 years and he turned to painting full time in 2010. His trailblazing work is represented in Europe, the US and Australia and his pieces are collected in numerous countries including the US, France, Canada and Switzerland.

Martiny received a commission from the Durst Organization in 2015 and he created two large-scale paintings that are permanently exhibited in lobby of One World Trade Center in New York City. See how he made the work here. It took 2 months to create the 12- by 15-foot paintings on site.  “Working on site was terrific because I was able to respond directly to the changing light, movement and space of the building,” he mentioned to Professional Artist magazine. Martiny also says the WTC commission was “a tremendously positive experience from beginning to end.”
