eep i'm sorry i didn't mean to come off that way. to be honest, i like the way gus is written, but if i knew him rl i'd probably be pretty annoyed by him like 'shut up gus it's just a pencil it isn't a metaphor'

Exactly I might appreciate him as a complex character but I don't see myself liking him.

one of his flaws is that he's pretentious, and that's one of the main flaws that he needs to overcome, like hazel's fear of being a crenade

First of all, I know what pretentious means ok. Second of all, I’m just saying I’m not having a good impression of him right now, and I don’t expect myself to like him. That’s it. I might grow very fond of him and Hazel, I might not.

it's a bit more than that, but basically, gus is an extremely pretentious teenager, obsessed with metaphors and omens about oblivion. and the cigarette is a grand metaphor because he has cancer — lighting a cigarette and smoking will eventually kill him, but if he puts the cigarette between his lips without lighting/smoking it he isn't giving the killing object power to kill him. for him, it represents strength because he needs it, and represents the power cancer has over him.

Ah, now it makes complete sense. But again, if he has cancer already, the sense of strength he feels is literally just an illusion, because it’s taking over him either way. 

I heard he was pretentious, and it pisses everybody off because of that particular quality? Is that why everybody is saying “it’s a metaphor” everywhere, to mock him in a way?
