Riley & caleb, things said at 1am
The Inquisition hosts a ball several weeks after the events at the Winter Palace, and it is slated to be a wonderful time. Riley wears a blue gown and the few pieces of jewelry she has. She dances reluctantly with a few of their current visitors because she understands hospitality, even if politics and diplomacy feel beyond her grasp. And it’s for Caleb. It’s for the Inquisition, but for her, that has always meant Caleb. Caleb is the Inquisitor, he is the only she follows into battle after battle, he is the one who will save them all -- and if she has to dance with a handful of Orlesian nobles who get a little too close or try to maintain some sort of political conversation in the middle of the dance, she will dance with her most neutral smile plastered on her face.
It’s not the Winter Palace. There’s no life or death game underneath the evening. There’s no Empress. There’s no one to fight, so she gets to wear a gown and expensive cosmetics. But it doesn’t feel like a party. She knows it was never going to be a party. She knows it was never supposed to be fun.
It was always going to be this -- polite conversation, acting as though she didn’t understand an insult when she received one to avoid causing offense, too many dances with people she is hardly acquainted with.
Riley plays the wallflower when it becomes too much, retreating to a corner of the room with a full glass of wine. She hasn’t had a chance to eat, so the generous glass of wine is surely a mistake, but not faking an illness to save herself from this night was a mistake, too.
But her wallflower act works only for so long before she is approached for another dance, and she declines as politely as possible, claiming the need for fresh air and a moment alone, and retreats further, slipping out of the side door to enter the garden.
She finds a seat out of direct line of sight of the door, and she sits to finish her wine and plan her escape back to her quarters. She feels more than a little ridiculous, edging on hysterical, for being the tiniest bit heartbroken that this night has been nothing like she imagined.
All things considered, she probably shouldn’t be surprised that Caleb joins her only a minute or two later.
She looks up at him and thinks about how it must be in the wee hours of the morning. She thinks about how lovely he looks, all dark skin and fine clothing and his eyes looking at her. She smiles, rubbing at her face because, yes, she is slightly drunk, and it’s not her best look.
“It would be nice,” she starts, embarrassed by how her voice wobbles, “to have something like this but it’s just for us. I just -- wanted to dance without having to remember not to smile too wide but not hold back too much emotion. I didn’t even get to see you.”
She rubs her face again.
“Maker, I’m so fucking maudlin, I really have had too much wine. I shouldn’t finish this. I need to go to bed.”

@infinitelydiverse for Niall & Ray.
Things had been more busy than usual. Niall always seemed to be busy with the shop and his family plus everything else. She understood but she had missed spending time with him so she took matters into her own hands. She decided to make it a special night. She packed a picnic basket of goodies then headed to the shop with the best intentions. Now if he would have time for it.
She walked into the shop then glanced around. her eyes shifted around till she spotted him. A huge grin came to her. “Hey stranger!” She said jokingly as she walked over carefully moving so she didn’t accidentally knocking anything over. “You busy?” She asked looking from him down at the basket. She did not want to go into it if he wasn’t going to come with her. It seemed pretty embarrassing though this all was a bit embarrassing for her. She wasn’t use to having to do this kind of thing.
@infinitelydiverse: jon sent: “ i’m no good at making small talk.”
“yeah, but you don’t have to be. who needs small talk anyway?”

The first time Stephen had even realized that Kamar Taj wasn’t as out of touch as even he assumed was when he met Wong’s rolodex. He supposed he should have known when on his first night Mordo gave him the wifi password, but the rest of the “detachment from mortal comforts” schtick had rather reinforced his idea that they were more than a few steps behind the times. But as it turned out, Wong’s rolodex contained a true wealth of resource information the likes of which exceeded even everything the fledgling digital age had managed to amass.
Everything from London boot makers that hadn’t been open or on the books since the 1880s, to the best potion ingredient retailers on the market. Which was the pristinely extracted card Wong come to him with one afternoon when he’d been stocking the Kamar Taj libraries with volumes that had been requested from the New York Sanctum. Wong was doing an advanced potions lesson over the next month - for acolytes, apprentices, and masters alike - and had quite an extensive shopping list. And as the other man had smirkingly asserted, Stephen had the widest variety of favors to offer in barter.
The bastard even had the nerve to send him off without letting him stay for lunch, something which even the students and Master Hamir bemoaned, but Stephen let himself be herded back to Manhattan so he could find his way to the artifacts shop. Thanks to the magical seal Wong had placed on it, all he had to do was tap into the charms micro-consciousness to access the memory of where it was located before stepping through a portal to its front door.
He smiled to him self, breathing in the different air and wondering when it was he got to go shopping last. Let alone for things not entirely unlike eye of newt and tongue of dog. Hopefully they were a bit more humane ingredients, but Stephen already knew that Wong had requested a pint of his blood for one of the later stages of the potions, which did not bode well for how complex of an instruction process it was going to be. Wong’s lessons had always been exacting, and humane ingredients tended to be hard to come by in magic.
Pushing open the door to the small shop, he was met with the favorite and familiar smell of truly ancient dust, antique parchment, and something that danced in the corners of the room that may just have been faerie dust or something else entirely. The bell that chimed merrily upon his entrance even felt like it was in the right key for heaven’s sake. “Hello?” he called, peering around the shelves to see if he could scry someone else in the shop. “Anyone home? The sign did say ‘open’... I think.”

haydn butts his hand up against her hand, letting delanie know she can scratch harder. that little motion and the way he’s slowly going boneless in her lap should serve as answer enough to her question. just to be sure, he turns his head, licking her palm with his broad, rough tongue just the once before resting his cheek against her stomach again. without his realizing, he’s letting out low rumbles of contentment with every steady exhale.
a light laugh rumbles in the back of her throat as haydn butts his head up against her hand, letting her know that he’s okay with this. that he’s comfortable. which is good. it’s a shame that she can’t communicate with him properly given the difference in their current forms. she lets out a louder laugh as the rough tongue drags up against her palm. then his head is resting against her stomach and she scratches a little firmly against his head, behind his ears.
@infinitelydiverse they !!! are so soft and pure !!!! i love them to bits !!!!
