Riley hesitates and is, for a moment that stretches on for a mile, utterly terrified by the possibility that Gwen might trust her. Riley feels the weight and the enormity of the responsibility that comes with a little girl's trust, it almost suffocates her, and she doesn't know how to explain, in words Gwen will understand, that she doesn't know how to be someone Gwen should trust.

So she doesn't even try. Riley doesn't want Gwen to feel like she's done something wrong. Instead, Riley smiles and offers her hand, relaxing her fist and opening her fingers so Gwen can take it.

"You don't even need to ask," she promises.
