Impact Albums, Part 2
@pyretic-perfect-storm (thank you!) posted some of the albums that impacted her while growing up. I thought I would do the same...
GBH - "Midnight Madness and Beyond" - A friend of my brother's in high school let me borrow a tape of this album. I loved it! I immediately went from being a metal head to being a punk rocker as well. This led me to back track to the Ramones, the Damned, the Clash and so much more.
Bad Brains - "I Against I" - Well, listening to tons of Iron Maiden had made me a huge metal fan. It led to me loving Motorhead, Metallica, Judas Priest, Dio, Exodus... and Slayer. So I was listening to Slayer's "Hell Awaits" album one day when my cousin Keven arrived for a family gathering. He heard the Slayer playing and said "That's just hardcore punk with guitar solos and evil lyrics." So he whips out a cassette tape of the "I Against I" album from Bad Brains and told me to put it on, I might like it. I was fucking blown away. I immediately got a tape and made a copy that I proceeded to completely wear out in a month or so. What was this music? Hardcore Punk? Metal? Jazz and Reggae influences? And the singer was insane... Damn. Well, I'm still a huge Bad Brains fan and this album got me digging into all kinds of hardcore music and even opened up the door for some reggae.
Husker Du - "Candy Apple Grey" - I heard this playing at a record store my buddies and I visited while on a trip to the beach after graduating high school. I didn't buy it then, but I was intrigued at the melodies mixed with heavy guitars. I never forgot it and eventually picked it up sometime during my college years, sending me head first into loving just about everything Bob Mould released. It also opened the door for my love of Alternative music.

Aerosmith - "Rocks" - I heard this entire album played on the radio when I was a young little Tim. I recorded it on one of those old school cheap as hell tape decks. It really started my journey into rock music. This album opened the door for Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin,Thin Lizzy, etc... It is one of my all-time favorite albums and I still listen to it a lot.
Rush - "Signals" - This album is super important to me, I don't think it is Rush's best album, but it was the one that I was listening to constantly leading up to the first ever concert I attended. Yep, Rush on their "Signals" tour. Not sure I could have picked a better concert for my first one. I went with some buddies from school. They all ran off to chase girls and get high. I never saw them again that night. This was one of those moments I knew I was different than them. I was there for the music, so I went inside the civic center and sat down. And the music was absolutely mind-blowing and amazing. The visuals on the giant video screen behind the band were also incredible. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
Iron Maiden - "Maiden Japan" - a kid in one of my classes way back in the day kept drawing the Iron Maiden logo on his notebooks. A week or so later I saw the video for "The Number of the Beast" in between movies on HBO. No shit. Curiosity got the best of me so I went out and bought the "Maiden Japan" live mini-album. Shortly after that I bought their first three albums and was at a record store the day the fourth one came out. Oh, and that kid drawing the logo? We started talking about Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and Black Sabbath and so on and it turned out he became one of my best friends. My brother from another mother!
