Sync/Lost--the crazy cool data visualization experiment seen above is the perfect tool for helping E-music lovers keep their sub-genres (and sub-sub genres) straight. 

It was built by a Brazilian interactive design firm called 3Bits. Their objective was to create an interface where users could view all the connections between the main styles of electronic music through visual and audible feedback. 

Its complex timeline not only maps the evolutionary history between different styles--from electrofunk to ambient, to trance and acid house--but also allows for (tri-)user navigation using what they call a 'Wiimote.'

As such, Sync/Lost can be read in a myriad of ways. Each chosen knot generates a visual feedback to its 'parent' and 'child' knots. This demonstrates where that particular style has its origins and which further styles were influenced from it. Each selection has its own descriptive text (ie. song title, artist, year). Everything manifests in real time, according to the user's choice. 

The installation's audio component can be experienced in 3 different ways: through headphones, sound tubes or sound islands for larger settings.
