The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
The Inheritance Cycle: Inheritance
Ok I feel like ranting about this book.Alrighty, so I am having a hell of a time trying to finish this book. This just goes to show how much I am disliking this book because when I like a book I read it like a maniac and devour it so quickly that sometimes I wish I had savored the experience a little more. Take The Hunger Games which I finished in less than a day...oops.
Now this book also happens to be like 860 pages or so but still. While I highly doubt I could finish it in a day it's been a really long time since I borrowed it from my cousin. Like at least a few months. He lent it to me shortly after it came out, once he had read it of course.
The reason that it's taking me so long to read the damn thing is not just cause it's long as all hell and it's not cause its' complicated, cause it's not (I mean I've even given up flipping to the back of the book to read the translation thing every time a character uses another language.)
No, the reason is that I just find this book insanely boring. Ugggg. Now since I am having the inexplicable need to just rant my ass off here I guess I'll talk a bit about the series in general.
I don't know when the hell I first read Eragon. According to Wikipedia it was re-published in 2003 and the Eragon movie (Worst! Movie! Ever!...no but definitely worst movie adaption of a book I've ever seen but most people agree that it sucked and that's another point entirely so I'm not going to elaborate on that) came out in 2006 so I guess I read it some time between then.
Anyways I loved the book. It's right up my ally in terms of books I enjoy. It has magic, it has cool characters with cool names, it has a flipping dragon...and did I mention is has magic? Yeah that's kinda the main criteria of a book I will enjoy. Magic of some way, shape or form. Anyways it's not the best book ever and it's not anywhere near being my fave book ever but it's fun and enjoyable, if a little complicated at times in terms of all the weird ass names for places and the confusing traveling between places and the fact that Christopher seems to feel the need to describe everything in such great detail that it makes it harder to picture rather than easier.
Anywho then there's Eldest. Again I loved it. Still has all the same flaws as Eragon, but it has the same charm and imagination too. I just enjoyed the book. There was some fun twists that I did not see coming. Also this book imprinted in me a great love of Roran, Eragon's cousin. He is the single most bad ass person in this series (a belief that is only strengthened in me in the next books). I want him to rule the world. Since Eldest I have been saying that Roran needs to rule the world.
Then there's Brisingr. This is when the Inheritance Trilogy became the Inheritance Cycle and that already made me pissed cause having all three books have the same number of letters and start with E would have been cool. Oh well, no instead we get this crap ass book and here begins my steady decline in love of this series. I'm not gonna bore you more than I already am (If anyone is even still reading at this point) with details cause presumably if you are still reading at this point then you've read the series. All I will say is that the entire middle section of that book was painful to read in my opinion. The beginning few chapters were good although I think it all went too fast since the first two books were somewhat leading up to those events. Oh well. And the ending part of the book was good beginning when Eragon went to make his sword. However the book is over 600 pages and the entire middle was torture. I mean he spends like a whole chapter describing Dwarvish rock formations I mean COME ON! Whatever maybe it's just me but I found the book waaaaaaaayyyyyyy too long with way too many pointless things happening and too many pointless descriptions. This book did solidify my love for Roran and my belief that he is the coolest person ever and should rule the world. It also infused in me a deep, fiery, passionate hatred of Nasuada. Harsh as it may be I spent the entire 3rd and 4th books deeply wishing she would die...sorry.I mean pretty much at this point the only people I live are Roran of course, Katrina cause she's cool and she never does anything annoying and she's married to Roran which be default makes her cool and Angela who is just awesome and I love her. Oh and Murtagh. F-ing love him. Everyone else I either hate or am indifferent too. I don't know why this book made me hate everyone...it just did.
So then Inheritance comes along and at this point I've been waiting so long and I just want the damn series to end. And then the book is 860 pages. I mean the 3rd being like 600 and the 4th being like 800 explains why he needed to make four not three and I would be ok with this if 2/3 of the third book weren't utterly pointless and once I read 4 honestly it was just pretty freaking pointless too. Arrrgggggg.
Ok if you haven't read Inheritance but are reading this post for some reason don't read the next part cause there are spoilers.
Sorry. Anyways it's taken me so long to read this stupid book I kinda don't even remember what the hell happened at the beginning. There were lots of battles I think. That's all fine and dandy and you might think that would make things less boring but for whatever reason I was still massively bored and apart from Roran being his usual BAMF self I just don't even care. Eragon's still kind of a f-ing moron, I still hate Nasuada more than even I understand, I kinda stopped loving Arya last book. Bleh whatever the reason I just hate like everyone and want them all to die except the few people I still like that I mentioned earlier. Fave part of this book was Nasuada getting kidnapped that was pretty sweet. Murtagh falling for her however...not so sweet cause man I really hate her.
Ok anyways more boring shit happens and then we get the awesome revelation that there are dragon eggs and Eldunari on that weird island that I'm too lazy to look up the name to. That was pretty cool and exciting.
Then we have the ultimate, final battle between Ergaon and the Kind Galbatorix and I don't know or care if I am spelling that right. Anyways much like the battle between HP and Voldy at the end of DH I thought this epic final battle was kinda fast and kinda too easy. Oh well the fight with Murtagh was cool. Sigh.
And then we have the stupid like 100 pages of aftermath to read and to be perfectly honest I am still reading those pages but I already know what happens cause I predicted it and then checked the Wikipedia page and yes I was right of course cause it was all stupidly obvious and I hate it.
My correct predictions being that Nasuada becomes the damn queen. Shit man I wanted Roran to rule the world. I mean it was painfully obvious that she would but I hate this cause I hate her.
And my other prediction since the freaking reveal of the green egg in whichever book that was in being that Arya would get the egg. Again a lot of people predicted this cause it was kinda obvious but whatever. I hate this too. I mean I don't hate Arya, she's one of those characters I became indifferent too but I didn't want her to have the egg for the same reason I didn't want Roran to get it. They are cool on their own. Arya was already a BAMF and while having a dragon makes her cooler I just wish she didn't cause she doesn't need it. Also I just love when the main character has something weird and unique about them. Like HP. I love tha fact that he's the only one to survive Avada Kedavra and if anyone else ever does I will be really upset. (Not that I'll ever know...not the point) I just like Eragon being the only rider. That of course had to end cause they found all the eggs but I wish he was still the only one of his friends/the characters we know. Also Eragon really needs to be a rider to be cool cause he's a flippin moron. But I digress.
And I think according to the page he flies off somewhere or something. Whatever I don't even care anymore.
Ok so this was a rather cynical rant...my bad. I was just feeling really furstrated over this book and felt the need to get it out there. A lot of the book series I read seem to get worse as they progress (in my opinion) and this saddens me. HP being the exception of course.
Anyways the point being that while I enjoyed the first two Inheritance Cycle books I think the final two descended into too much pointless description and just being toooooo long. Long books are great if they need to be long. I find so much of the bulk of these books to be boring, random filler crap that could have been filtered out but oh well.
Ok now for all my complaining I still like the series as a whole. It's fun, it's mostly interesting and it's just one of those things you have to see through to the end. Christopher has apparently stated (according to Wikipedia) that he has more stories to write in the land of Alagasia (I am again too lazy to look up the spelling) and I don't know if I'll bother to check them out. Maybe I'll just ask my cousin if they're good cause I bet he'll read them.
Anyways (I say that a lot) if you happen to be still reading this I deeply thank you. I kinda love ranting about books...like a lot...a lot a lot, and most of the people in my rl don't appreciate me doing it so being able to type down all my feelings here is really nice and if people actually take the time to read through my insane babbling then that's even nicer so again I thank you if you are still here <3
Also if anyone feels like chatting about the Inheritance Cycle or any other books send me a message. I love talking about books so I'd love to chat with you.
k Bye for now.
