“That’s not my job.” I’ve heard this countless times in my career from people that didn’t want to help someone or do something that wasn’t in their “job description.” The funny thing is that the more you do out of your job description is what will help you keep your job, be promoted, or referred for another one. The more you say you don’t or can’t do something, the truth is, the higher the chances people won’t want to work with you. I don’t mean spending all of your hours doing someone else’s job, not delegating/trusting or not getting paid what you deserve, I mean helping one another learn when needed or don’t restrict yourself to being there for a colleague and they can return the favor. Going above & beyond as a team, with the team, and for the team, is what creates wins. Job descriptions are written to help you understand the skillset you need to get a job, but once you get the job, you can make the job raise your own unique value proposition & mindset that will set you apart. People always remember who they loved working with, but remember more who they didn’t enjoy working with. In various stages of my career from employee to leader to entrepreneur, I’ve always been apart of a team that knows how to “GSD,” by being resourceful x helpful. We were the kind of team that would book the venue, hire the artist, manage & oversee the concert production, promote the event and then still be the same team helping clean up at the end of the night or handing out free posters, it was rewarding to know not any of us felt like we were doing things out of our job descriptions, but instead doing all we could to get the job done right. That’s what I mean in the book, @inherpurpose, saying “GSD. When all else fails, just get sh*t done.” I’ve personally been negative at times and see how counterproductive that could be.
