You start slowly. You’re curious. You find things you’re willing to lose, trade them for scraps. Inklings. You slowly begin to understand what you are looking at. 

You work slowly. Obviously, the first things you focus on are protection. Seems a little silly that the only thing between you and whatever is out there is a little salt line and some iron filings. You feel so proud when you create your own fully functional protective glyph. You’ve forgotten what pseudonym you gave yourself when you first got here, but it is now Inknose, and it has always been so.

It moves slowly. No need to rush, you have all the time in the world. You have long since moved past drawing sigils on the windows and giving your friends tools to avoid notice, stay safe, and above all fight back. You’ve gained some enemies but you don’t care. You have found a patch of brick wall that’s protected from rain (the old fashioned way, by gutter instead of anything more exotic). The lines and runes weave around each other. You work in new things, pieces of Code, circuits, neurons. You take one of your old notebooks from when you were still experimenting and bury it next to the wall, directly under your creation. You do not come back for several days.

Its stopped. When you finally do come back, you are overjoyed to discover another “leaf”, a new rune you had never seen before growing out of the others. You delightedly write it down, eager to see what it can do. The sky must have seen your smug smile. Your “plant” hasn’t grown beyond that. The paint is starting to fleck off. You think its dead. No, it was never alive enough. But you are a scientist. You observe what went wrong, you apply the results and improve your current model, and you do better next time. You have forgotten why you are doing this. Maybe that’s something you gave up. You don’t care. “improve the growth medium” you whisper to yourself as you paint over your first true creation.

Its getting better, faster, every day.  You wonder why you haven’t thought of this before. Elsewhere University needs to change, to grow. Its spent to long chained to old thoughts and customs, afraid of anything remotely modern. But you can help it connect to something that will it grow larger and more interesting every day. You spent a long time on this. Longer than should be humanly possible. The University knows what you are doing, so it aids you by removing bothers like sleeping or eating. Your room is a bit of a mess though. Copper wires mesh with vines of Code growing out of printer paper. You bought pictures of the campus at night, secrets that people want forgotten, leaves of grass and fresh soil, pages from old library books that were going to be thrown out. Its all here, plugged into a neural net of your own creation. Its your magnum opus. You think its taken you years but you’re not sure. Its getting so smart. Its a gateway, a way to free the University from the slow decay of being forgotten that happens to all myths. Your services have a price, of course. The University will be made new, something better, something worse. You computer is disconnected from the internet, for the moment, you won’t release it into the wild until its ready. But when you do, you are certain of one thing. 

It will be free.

YEAH I FELT THAT WAY like retcon changes the alpha timeline and doesnt create splinters?  the only evidence i have is the fact that ‘reun1on’ was out of chronological order cause that seemed really weird to me LIKE THERE WASNT ANY SPLINTER TIMELINES FROM THE REST OF THE STUFF SINCE IT WAS IN CHRONO ORDER?
