"Anne Frank Remembered," by Miep Gies and Alison Leslie Gold. Ever since I read "The Diary of a Young Girl," by Anne Frank, in 8th grade, it has deeply impacted my life. "Anne Frank Remembered," by Miep, is a story of true courage that adds so much to "Anne Frank's Diary." As a young woman, Miep Gies began working for Otto Frank's business in the 1930s. He had moved with his family from Nazi Germany to Holland because they were Jewish, and the Frank family thought they had escaped to safety. During this time, Miep Gies became a trusted and cherished friend of Anne Frank and her family. Unfortunately, a few years later, the Nazis suddenly invaded Holland, and Jews and many Dutch civilians were forced to endure the Nazis' persecution. Miep Gies did not hesitate to hide Anne Frank and her family in the secret Annex, and she provided vital support to them during the two years they spent in hiding from the Nazis. Miep, her husband, and her trusted friends helped hide several Jewish friends: the Frank family (Otto, Edith, Margot, & Anne Frank), the van Pels family (Hermann, Auguste, & Peter van Pels), and later on Fritz Pfeffer. Miep and her friends brought food, news about WW2, and other necessities to both families each day, and she spent time with them as a dear friend. They risked their lives to keep them alive for as long as possible. Thankfully, Miep saved and preserved "Anne Frank's Diary." Without her courage, millions may not have ever read "Anne Frank's Diary" and been touched by Anne's story, her hopes, her dreams, and her loving heart. Miep Gies is a true hero, and, thankfully, she wrote this memoir. She lived to be 100 years old, and she passed away only 7 years ago in 2010. If you care deeply about human rights like I do, then I highly recommend reading both "The Diary of a Young Girl" and "Anne Frank Remembered," if you haven't already read both of their memoirs.
