Ontari was born to the north — deep in Azgeda territory to a small humble village of warriors and fishermen. She was six when they started to collect the night bloods in Azgeda for the next round of training for commander. Being so young she didn’t quite know what was going on, Ontari had never known much about the political system of the nations at that age, and as a result her only knowledge that people outside of Azgeda were looking for those with her color of blood was the fact that there was a strange man that was not Azgeda in the palace when she was brought there. The man left with a boy around her age ( slightly older ) and she never saw the man or boy again. Ontari however was thus introduced to the Ice Queen, who at first treated her well, and like a sort of princess. The concept being to get the little girl from the northern village to trust her and open up to her. Which she did. And Ontari’s village was burned to the ground her parents ( killed ) so that he would have no desire to go back home and would from an almost instant attachment to the people who were clothing her, and feeding her, and showing her kindness.
However, it took less than a few months for her to be moved out of the palace and begin her training, studying stories of their pasts, past conflicts and wars, political alliances between the clans, the cultures behind each of the clans, how the territories have been set, and most importantly the spiritual need for a Heda to lead them all on the right path. Forced of course in Ice Nation but Nia ( more than anything ) was set on crating a new Heda, a Heda that wouldn’t just do what was best for her people and her clan but all the people under her control. One that would listen to the demands of Sangeda and Trishana equally. While maybe favoring Azgeda — but never by a noticeable degree. She was to be perfect, and strong, and the ideal the next commander would be raised with the people instead of locked up in a tower and only learning what the flame-keeper and teachers thought were necessary. A path that had lead the Heda from once being a strong leader, to nothing more than a figurehead that was used to mediate the conflicts between clans occasionally.
She was trained with the warriors, the war agaisnt Trikru raged while she was growing up, and she was to interact with her people — of course Nia’s plans couldn’t be revealed so the girl was often depicted and was to act like a hand maiden outside of the palace. However what had once started as a noble pursuit turned more and more sour as Ontari aged and the pressure on Azgeda to change their ways was increased by the powers in Polis, Ontari went from being a child that was meant to be raised for the good of all people, to one that would restore Azgeda’s honor and restore their place as the best of the Nations. This occurring by the time that she was ten/eleven years old. The pressure to achieve perfection skyrocketed, Nia’s expectation did as well, and so did the punishments for messing up. Setting back the plan that needed to be put in motion. While originally being raised well ( and that word being used loosely seeing as the Queen did have her parent’s killed ) the girl started being emotionally, verbally and physically abused by the Queen and her trainers starting at that age.
The girl as a result, became hard — and held onto the one thing that made it seem worthwhile her saying by the Queen’s side — the fact that she was meant for this, that she was to be the savior of the clans, that only she could restore Azgeda’s place and honor and help the twelve clans live in harmony. Ontari however, has never seen her childhood as anything other than normal ( up to a certain point that will be discussed later ) the abuse that was thrown at her was something to make her stronger. And that’s how she justified it, there was no wrongdoing by Nia because the royalty of Azgeda could do no wrong. Because that’s what she had started being taught. She was fine she was strong and she was important and that’s how she got through it. She’s devoted to her cause, to her purpose more than anything because it’s the only thing that she had to hold onto everything else was ripped away from her. The kindness that Nia once showed her, the family that she’d known as a young child, and she’d never been allowed to form attachments with other children. Her only interactions were with adults that were trying to shape her. Which can be traumatizing by itself — so to keep herself grounded she focused on her cause. Serving the Queen, Serving Azgeda, Serving the clans.
She becomes rather manipulative in order to escape punishments, using her words, fear, and physicality ( as she get older ) to convince the people training her not to harm her when she messes up. She learns what movements attract what people, and how to present herself in front of a court. She doesn’t really interact with Roan until after she’s turned thirteen as well so he’s kept at the same distance than the others that she meets after her shift. She however takes a liking to Roan, he’s grown up in similar conditions with the Queen as his mother — and while she’ll never know what the extent of his childhood was like, she respects him. Seeing him, as the only other person in this world that could possibly be her equal ( and the Queen as the only person who could possibly be better than her ).
And stopping this at age 15 since adolescence is slightly different

With an easy smooth swipe of her hands she pushed the black boots from the seat of the chair she wished to occupy, her own aching from being on her feet all day. Later she might judge herself on the less than grace matter how she slumped onto the chair that lightly cracked beneath her weight, signs of old wear but there wasn’t enough material to fix the problem. “Seems your day was as long as mine.” Lexa remarked, looking up with a lazy gaze at the other guard. “You alright?” she asked, nudging her knee against Cara’s.
