"Autumn Days" I'm breaking the habit of promising after months without posting anything, that I'm going to start again. The fact is, I don't know if I will. Life has an unpredictability to it during this chapter, that I've come to respect like a wild animal. It is surprising, harsh, adorable, and like this moment, beautiful. "Almost Ready" Kit has a unique love language. Someday I'm going to tell our little boy how hard his Dad juggled med school and "baby projects." Painting and modifying this crib was a labor of love. Fun fact: It was painted a month and a half ago, and it's still not dry. "Dreamers" I grew up in the United States, went to school here, started a career, speak English, pay taxes, obey the law, fell in love, and am now starting a family. This is the only home I've ever known. I'm your average American millennial. My country just decided 800,000 of my countrymem with the same story don't belong. They did nothing to deserve getting kicked out of their lives... their home, and sent to live in a country most have no memory of, don't know anyone in, and where many don't even speak the language. I can't have a conversation about Trump's decision to end DACA, because there is no logical reason for it. It would be unwise to think for a minute that this had nothing to do with racism and white supremacy in the White House. The fact is, ending DACA would give the federal government legal grounds to remove around 800,000 primarily brown and black Americans.  The only Un-American thing about the Dreamers, would be them losing the right to work, drive, get an education, and to live in fear until they're kicked out of our country. "Unity" A few days ago after expressing my sadness and desire for unity after learning of the white supremacists terrorism in Charlottesville, a friend responded that a cry for unity shows ignorance. Hearts and bodies are breaking. What I crave is a more unified outcry from those who are silent or afraid to speak against others of their party. Through my studies of history, and what I've witnessed first-hand around the country and around the world during my travels, I know I will never have full understanding of any of these issues or topics, but they have taught me a lot. And despite what I've seen and learned, I will always fight internally for the belief that most people have more good than bad in them. I have made the choice to not give up on that belief. Some use despair and pessimism as a crutch, as an excuse. Hope sometimes takes more energy and action. It takes bravery to say, through tears, "I see what is happening and we must do better, we can be more unified." "Making Nails" She motioned me over as I walked past her hut. The ifugao woman squatted on the ground looking up at me with the friendly smile I was becoming used to in the Philippine's northern mountains. "I'm making nails," she said. I looked at the curly fibers at her feet, being new to the area was still struggling the local accent. She saw my confusion and repeated herself, demonstrating how the long strands are wound tightly, they securely connect objects together. The region is know for small elevated houses called "bale" or "no nail" houses made from wood and grass. Without written records no one knows for sure how old the bale are, but some natives I spoke to claim the homes they live in predate their great-grandparents. The #workmanship is exquisite. "Waiting at the Weber" People ask me what I've been craving during my pregnancy. The truth is, I've wanted to be in Utah's northern mountains more than I've wanted to eat mint ice cream, or Ethiopian food, though those have had their moments, too. There's nothing more delicious than cool clean air and the smell of sage.
