“People Make The World Go Round (Carl Craig Remix)” by Innerzone Orchestra feat. Paul Randolph
Carl takes this song and remixes it into three parts, starting off with an ambient vibe with Paul’s vocals then it goes into it’s electronic downtempo parts.
A Song A Day #72 - I love KDJ’s remix of Innerzone Orchestra’s People Make the World Go Round. Funny thing is I had never heard Innerzone Orchestra’s original cover of the Stylistics’ early-seventies socially conscious soul classic until I considered posting this version. I owned the 12″ single with this remix on one side and Carl Craig’s on the other. I didn’t own and I have never heard Innerzone Orchestra’s album, Programmed, which featured their original version.
I know the Stylistics’ original quite well, but I don’t think I remember it from my childhood. The big songs I remember from them are You Are Everything and You Make Me Feel Brand New. People Make the World Go Round was a single when I was eight or nine, but I think I only knew it by name until I bought The Best of The Stylistics around the mid- to late-nineties. The version on Programmed has a lot in common with the original, but is also quite different. Paul Randolph is the only singer as opposed to five and here is a jazzier more spare feel to the cover. I enjoyed it and will make a point to listen to Programmed in the near future.
Although this version is called a remix I’m not sure what if anything has been preserved from the Programmed version. Kenny Dixon Jr (aka Moodymann) records a whole new version featuring Norma Jean Bell on sax and Amp Fiddler on keyboards. Both have connections to George Clinton’s P-Funk family. Bell played on the P-Funk All-Stars’ Urban Dancefloor Guerillas (1983) and Fiddler had an extended stint with P-Funk dating back to George Clinton’s R&B Skeletons in the Closet (1986). They’ve also both done some great music as solo acts.
This starts out super relaxed with the sax taking the lead followed by the keys moving out front for a short stretch. The sax, keys, and bass then weave in and out of each for a few minutes and then the tune makes a big shift. The tempo is upped considerably to more of a dancefloor tune, but for a small backroom, not the big room. Still one need not get up and dance to enjoy the tune. I’m tapping my foot and nodding and shaking my head as I type this and closing my eyes every so often to fully dive in.
