When designing a new character, what's the first thing you think about? eg name, personality, appearance

Man this is a good question! It’s hard to say actually, and usually it depends on the character. I think personality is often what comes to mind when I’m designing a character from scratch, or a new outfit for an existing character. What fits in their style, making sure it includes their signature colour and so on.

Personal style often comes into play - mixing armour and femininity for Akane, keeping things comfortable and easy to move in for Robin, Nyssa’s favouring of jumpsuits and jackets and so on, and I kinda try to echo it in their casual outfits too.

When I’m designing a family member for an existing character it’s a lot more intricate. With the Lincolns, for example, I had to sort of “subtract” Robin’s dad’s more Hispanic skin tone to get her mother’s. You can kinda see that Roderick and William look vaguely more Hispanic than Robin or Tobin do, as it’s probably unlikely all children of a mixed ethnic background would share the exact same skin tone. It was the same with hair colour - Dad has dark brown which he shares with Roderick, while Mom is more blond and Robin/Tobin/William have a mix between the two which results in an almost red/ginger colour.

Buuut if I’m designing a character from scratch sometimes it just ends up being ‘what’s a cool part of a design I’ve seen elsewhere that I want to incorporate somewhere and what else does it fit with?’

I don’t really have much of a process that works every time, mostly it’s just what works at the specific point in time lol.
