A Blind Eye || Philip & Martinez
Running his hands over his face, Martinez's face scrunched together, and he inhaled a long, rattling breath through his nose. Blinking he looked up, taking in his surroundings. The dark haired woman who'd showed him to a room had said the town was called Woodbury. She'd said there was a barricade, that the streets were safe enough for walking but not to get caught out in them after dark. She'd also told him to get some rest with something akin to sympathy on her face.
He'd tried, laid back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling for God knows how long before he'd given up and made his way outside. Neither his body or his mind could handle the stillness. He wasn't sure how long he'd been on the road, the days and nights running together in a blur of Lucia's cries and the constant chaos around the highway --
Lucia, his baby girl. He pinched his eyes shut, murmuring a blessing of the dead under his breath. He knew it wouldn't help, but he felt his hands fumble for the creased leather wallet in his pants pocket. He bypassed the now-useless credit cards and pulled out the single photograph from inside. The backs of his eyes burned and a sad smile passed over his lips as he stared down at it.
At the sound of footsteps on the asphalt, he snapped the wallet, shoving it back into his pocket, and spun towards the sound, hand fumbling for the baseball bat he'd left in his room.
