So this is fairly important I guess. I read that crickets can sometimes carry parasites harmful to beardies, do you think pet shop crickets are alright?
Sorry, I didn't see I had a notification for this message! But I think so. The crickets that I give Krogan are all bought from a petstore. When she was a baby she had parasites, but the vet said she could have picked that up from her living at the petstore. Krogan had a fairly recent vet visit about 2 months ago and she was parasite free. :)
If you feel like the petstore has nasty crickets then you could try ordering some online. I’ve never ordered crickets online before, so I can’t really give you a good website. I think Timberline is a good reputable source for crickets though?
Hey! So I'm getting some dubias! Thank The Lord I could convince my mom she hates roaches but I could use some advice on what to feed them and how to take care of dubias
If you don’t plan on breeding them, just get a small plastic tub or something to keep them in. Something with good ventilation so they can breathe and something plastic where they can’t climb up the edges. I always buy Krogan veggies in bags and usually I don’t end up using them all so I throw them away. If you don’t want to waste your veggies, you can feed some to your roaches. They can eat fruits, veggies, whole grain, breakfast cereals, and processed pet food. I always fed mine collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, carrots, broccoli, and a little bit of grains all blended up. But I normally fed them extra veggies and fruits I bought for Krogan so I wouldn’t have to spend extra money buying other things and so the fruits and veggies I already had weren’t wasted. I never bred roaches though, I just kept them until I fed them off. Oh and you can order some water crystals or get some Fluker’s cricket quencher, it looks like little gelatin filled with water. I think the dubia roaches will drown in open water? I’m not sure.
Anyways, sorry for the long reply. But here’s a good link for you. And you can dust the roaches too with the calcium just like you do the crickets. :)
If you plan on making your own colony (it takes a while for the babies to hatch, but it saves money) here’s a good picture of what a dubia colony looks likes!
Good luck! ^_^
I just wanted to tell you beardy is doing so well. He's shedding right now but without your help i wouldn't have known how to take care of him properly. Thank you so much ❤️
That's amazing! I'm always here if you need help with anything! ^_^
You must hate me by now! I have a dusting powder that has calcium and all the vitamins Godzilla needs, Is this okay? And how many times should I dust the crickets
I don't hate you at all! I dust the crickets every other day. But they're always gutloaded. I dust the veggies every other day too. I put vitamins on her food or in her water 3 or 4 times a week.
Godzilla also stays toward the basking side of it's cage, is that okay?
Yep! During the day when they're awake and basking that's what they'll mainly be doing. :) Krogan just sits and basks most of the day. Sometimes she will run around and poop or something but she sits and basks a lot.
Hey it's Godzilla's owner again! I have two more questions. First Godzilla's basking lamp gets to be about 85-90 degrees and I really don't know how to raise the temperature if that's off. Godzilla has a plant that it likes to stay at the top towards the lamp which towards the top it's about 95 degrees. Also this morning Godzilla waved at me with both arms, what does that mean?
Basically to adjust the degrees, all you need to do is just make it where Godzilla can get closer to their lamp to get more heat!
The arm waving is just social behavior! It's their way of being submissive or showing signs of dominance. It could be his or her way of saying "I'm not a threat!" and not wanting you to hurt them. They also do this when mating and they also do this around other beardies as a way of acknowledging each others presence. They do this too around larger animals, so he/she could just be submissive and not wanting you to hurt them/not wanting to cause trouble/not wanting to come off as a threat.
Off topic, but I LOVE the name you picked out for your beardie! I love Godzilla. I wish you and your little king of the monsters the best of luck!
One more question I got him/her yesterday should I not mess with him/her and let them get adjusted?
Yeah, I would just let them stay in their tank and explore and just get comfortable for now. When I first got Krogan, I left her alone for about a week. I of course had to bother her to feed her, but I didn't hold her until she got use to me.
I forgot to mention that they should be fed everyday and younger/juvenile beardies need a lot of bugs. Make sure the bugs you feed them are no bigger than the width between their eyes because they could choke on them. I always start off the day by giving Krogan a plate of greens and I wait a few hours and feed her about 5-10 crickets/roaches. I always leave a plate of greens in her tank that she munches on through out the day and I give her a fresh plate every morning.
