Part 3 of my character references for my Inscryption D&D AU (drawn by the talented @macaronipup), featuring Poe, the warforged tinkerer/fighter. More info under the cut.
- Was created by a disappeared, advanced civilization, but he'd been lying deactivated and gathering rust in the ruins of one of their cities for the past couple thousand years. By the time he booted up again, his memory banks had corrupted completely and he was left a blank slate, forced to relearn nearly everything from the ground up.
- Was found, repaired, and taken in by the Dredger, Melter, and Inspector (humans with cybernetic implants or prostheses in this AU), who also gave him his name, derived from the only semi-legible series of foreign symbols stamped on his rusted armor, which sort of looked like “P-0-3.”
- The Dredger, Melter, and Inspector were killed in a raid on their village about 10 years before the main story starts. Poe himself was captured and sold for an obscene amount of money the next continent over, treated like an object and forced to work for his new master in the smithy day in and day out.
- Enchanted shackles around his wrists and ankles are engraved with powerful spells, which cause him excruciating pain every time they get activated (Poe has a profound distrust of magic in part because of this). They are unable to be removed by normal means because of how heavily enchanted they are; Magnificus would need access to his library to break them.
- Body is made of a strange type of living, self-repairing metal alloy. Healing spells actually work on him, which freaks him and everyone else out. He also - somehow - has a soul, unlike most repurposed forged, who are mindless, empty husks that can be programmed to carry out basic tasks.
- Can mimic any voice he hears perfectly. Can also project other images on his screen when he wants to.
- Does have clothing and a cloak Grimora made for him for when they need to pass through settlements without being noticed, but he doesn't like wearing them. But he likes pretending to be the rest of the party's mindless servant even less, so he reluctantly puts up with it.
- Carries all his tinkering tools and blacksmithing materials with him, and often drops into smithies in the towns they pass through to get some inventing done. He makes little bots of his own for extra support in battle, and also explosives, bombs, acid, and other chemical compounds.
- Fights predominantly with his blacksmithing hammers, and is not averse to throwing them directly at someone's cranium. Like this. :V
- Has the best aim of anyone in the group, and is lethal with a crossbow, gun, or anything else he can point and shoot.
- A resourceful and creative fighter, but not in any way elegant or graceful. Values function over form, and focuses on just causing as much damage as he can ASAP. It doesn't have to be pretty or poetic, it just needs to work.
- Just as dramatic as everyone else, though, even if he may show it in different ways, mostly through cutting sarcasm and dry insults.
Final part of the character concepts for my Inscryption D&D AU (courtesy of @macaronipup), Magnificus the human wizard [School of Divination subclass]. Character info below the cut.
- Used to be old adventuring buddies with Grimora in their younger days, and the two have kept in touch even after going their separate ways.
- Currently a professor at a prodigious magical university, and his three senior students are running interference for him with the school faculty while he’s on his quest to find answers for the premonitions he’s been getting recently.
- Randomly gets prophecies and premonitions even when he's not actively trying. It's really a pain. He often seems distracted and lost in his own thoughts because of this, and sometimes has trouble focusing on the present moment .
- Best strategist and tactician in the group. Now, if only his allies would actually listen to him for once instead of charging into things willy-nilly, that would be great...
- Paints his visions in order to better understand and decipher them. It’s also great stress relief, and he can usually be found absently doodling or painting things in his free time, even if it’s just with a stick and some dirt.
- Definition of a glass canon. Like, he's not 100% helpless without his magic, he can throw a pretty mean punch, but compared to the rest of the group, he's definitely at a disadvantage.
- Alternatively, he has the highest magic firepower of the entire group, so he usually stays at the back of the party and casts from a distance, like ya do.
- Paintbrush doubles as his magic wand.
- Is, as Poe would say, a killjoy and also quite pretentious, but he can actually loosen up and have fun under the right circumstances. His students and Grimora are the likeliest to bring this side out of him.
- Can make potions and enchant items, and hence is the other main crafter of the group aside from Poe. They develop a reluctant mutual respect over each other's skills even before they start to become friends because of this.
- Can communicate with each of his three head disciples through various enchanted mox on his person if he really needs to; a sapphire mox crystal ball for LW, a ruby mox dagger for Pike, and an emerald mox bottle of magic paint for Goobert.
- Dramatic dramatic dramatic; practices monologues in the mirror when he’s by himself. XD
The first of 4 character references for my Inscryption D&D AU (done by @macaronipup )! This is Grimora as a human cleric (Death Domain; her patron deity is the Bone Lord). Misc. info under the cut.
- Used to be a wild and well-traveled adventurer in her youth, but now spends her days recording the stories of the dying who come through her church for their last rites, and also helping law enforcement solve mysteries by casting Speak with Dead on recently deceased corpses.
- Kaycee Hobbes is her closest liaison with law enforcement, and the two are good friends.
- Cutlass belonged to Royal, whose ship she sailed on for a number of years back in her adventuring days. His ghost haunts her church, unwilling to move onto the afterlife without his old friend.
- Sawyer is a man she saved from the brink of death from a dog attack and decided to become an acolyte of the Bone Lord out of gratitude. She leaves her church in his care once she sets out on her newest quest.
- Deceptively strong. She has meat on her bones, and isn't afraid to use it, despite being in her mid-60s.
- Dramatic. Really loves acting and relishes the chance to put on a show, whether it be tricking ruffians or getting out of trouble with law enforcement.
- Does not leap into conflict and prefers a more diplomatic approach whenever possible. Can across as somewhat disingenuous, because to keep the peace, she will not always say what is on her mind. Despite this, she's the group's spokesperson, because it's not like the boys can be trusted with diplomacy. :p
- If push comes to shove, though, she is downright scary in a fight. If she actually pulls out her cutlass, she won't hold back, and focuses on ending the fight ASAP. With the appropriate dramatic flair, of course.
- Only member of the party that can actually cook decent food. Loves her cuppas.
Part 2 of 4 of character concepts for my Inscryption D&D AU (art by @macaronipup), this time Leshy, who in this AU is a firbolg druid (Circle of the Shepherd). More info under the cut.
- Centuries old; has been living in the wilds of his forest for so long that local legends have sprung up about him. “Leshy” is what the locals call him, as his real name is unpronounceable by those who do not speak Giant.
- Keeps to himself and his creatures for the most part, but he does love a good card game, and will take in weary travelers if they agree to play with him. He does socialize sometimes with the old prospector who comes through looking for precious metals (he treats his dog well and is generally respectful, so Leshy tolerates his presence); the goliath fisherman who helps keep the local fish populations in check; and the married couple who come through with tales from the outside world and interesting baubles and trinkets and furs to trade.
- The woodcarver is Leshy’s even more reclusive older sister in this AU, who spends her days in her secluded cave in the mountains carving strange, enchanted totems and pondering the mysteries of life. A vision of hers is what really kicks off his quest to find answers regarding the corruption infecting his forest.
- Spear is topped with a spearhead made of extremely sharp obsidian. He can chuck that thing really far, and he's pretty accurate with it, too.
- Very fit, quite strong. Could bench press Magnificus and P03 at the same time with little issue.
- Biggest drama queen of the party, unequivocally. Will monologue your ear off. Can sometimes be an issue in combat when he just needs to get to the point and kill something instead of being all flashy with his spells and shit.
- Bigoted against all forms of technology more complicated than a washing machine. Immensely distrusts anything industrial and inorganic, and it takes him and P03 ages to get along because of this.
- Loves wildshaping. Loves it so much. Often turns into an animal in order to kill things instead of using his spear, simply because he likes being a beast so much. Will often change into other creatures to scout ahead or infiltrate hard-to-reach places. Favored forms are: grizzly bear, elk, adder, raven, bat, river snapper, and praying mantis.
- Has an animal companion, a scarily-intelligent rat named Knapsack (the Pack Rat from the game).
- Foliage on wooden antlers changes with the seasons. The reference image shows their appearance in summer.
- Tattoos are magical and function as a sort of magical emergency battery if he runs low in battle or in some other high-risk situation. Take 24 hours to recharge after use.
When an ancient, eldritch force sealed deep inside the earth starts begins breaking free of its prison, a ragtag team of four unlikely allies become the only things standing between it and global catastrophe.
Starring:
- A cleric on a mission to uncover the secrets surrounding a string of mysterious deaths in her city.
- A druid just looking for a way to save his idyllic forest from the corruption leeching into it from an unknown outside source.
- An amnesiac automaton, a relic from a bygone civilization, desperately searching for answers about his past.
- A wizard plagued with unwanted visions of destruction and ruin, hoping to protect his city and students from a looming, uncertain future.
