Naturalist and artist John James Audubon marveled at the astonishing multitudes of Passenger Pigeons in the early 1800s. During one day’s viewing of a flock he wrote that, “the light of noon-day was obscured as by an eclipse.” Today, artist Stephanie Brown studies Passenger Pigeon specimens in our collection to inform her tattooing of Audubon’s illustration. The species went extinct in 1914. Two artists, working less than 200 years apart, observe a species in dramatically different ways. Learn more about Audubon’s work in our mini-exhibition, Birds of America, and keep up with Stephanie’s Audubon tattoos at @feralcatbox. [images 1 & 2: Stephanie Brown, 3: John J. To mark the Bears’ 100th season, we’re counting down the 100 greatest players in franchise history. Coming in at No. 35 is receiver Harlon Hill. Of all the great players in Bears history, only three have been named the NFL most valuable player: Sid Luckman, Walter Payton and Hill. For three years, Hill was as good as any player in football, making 134 receptions for 3,041 yards and 32 touchdowns from 1954-56, earning him comparisons with Raymond Berry and Don Hutson. Sadly, injuries and alcohol abuse ended Hill’s Hall of Fame potential before he pulled himself together after his playing days. He played 89 games over 8 seasons with the Bears from 1954 to 1961. To mark the Bears’ 100th season, we’re counting down the 100 greatest players in franchise history. Coming in at No. 42 is guard Ray Bray. Bears rosters of the 1940s were filled with the names of intimidating men, and Bray, nicknamed “Muscles,” was the one guy not to mess with — especially if you played for the Packers. Not everything revolved around the rough-and-tumble brawls of early football, though. Bray could block with the best of them, and his blocking on “Bingo Keep It” enabled Sid Luckman to score virtually untouched during the 1946 NFL title game. A four-time Pro Bowler — and three-time champion — Bray played 109 games over 10 seasons with the Bears from 1932-42 and 1946-51.
