Gator Baseball may be over but it’s not the only game in town (or out of town for that matter!) Wednesday was my second trip to Daytona Beach to cover the Cincinnati Reds Class A Advanced affiliate Daytona Tortugas. Both times I immediately felt right at home in the historic ballpark. I guess you could say I kind of have a thing for historic ballparks (it’s how my love for the Red Sox actually began!) and The Jack is no exception. Originally named City Island Ballpark, it was built in 1914, two years after Fenway. It even has the same kind of old-fashioned score board as Fenway that someone changes the score by hand! In 1989 it was renamed for the legendary #42, Jackie Robinson. It was 73 years ago history was made here when Robinson took the field as a member of the Triple-A Montreal Royals—a minor league affiliate of the then-Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1946 segregation laws in Florida were strictly enforced. After Jacksonville and Sanford refused to allow the game due to those laws, Daytona Beach permitted the exhibition game, which was played on March 17, 1946. That first racially integrated game in baseball history was an important step to Robinson breaking the Major Leagues' color barrier the following year when he joined the Dodgers. Major League Baseball honors Robinson in numerous ways. Daytona Beach and the Florida State League wanted his important legacy in integrating Minor League Baseball remembered as well, by naming the ballpark after him. The Jack is definitely a special place for America’s favorite pastime to be played. An added bonus for me is three former Gators are currently playing here: Mark Kolozsvary, Jonathan India , and Michael Byrne. This weekend another former Gator comes to The Jack: Dalton Guthrie, playing for Phillies‘ affiliate Clearwater Threshers.
