@BIGPICTURE INSTAGRAM TAKEOVER 9/9

Hello everyone. Its David Litchfield here for one final time. It’s been so much fun being in charge of Walker Picture Books Instagram page for the past few days. Thanks for following along and thank you to the lovely Walker Books for allowing me to do this :) For my final post I thought it would be good to share a few of the pages from ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ next to the original sketched out ‘Roughs’.
As you saw from some of my earlier posts a book will go through a number of different stages. From initial quick idea sketches, to character designs, to experiments with colour and texture. But one of the most satisfying stages for me is when you create the first ‘Rough’ of the book. This is where you have a sketched out copy of the entire book. It’s really exciting to see how the images all flow together and the book really feels like it is starting to come together and taking narrative shape. Obviously, the ‘Rough’ is just that: it’s very, very rough. It scruffy and sketchy, but I still find this part of the process a really important and enjoyable stage to focus on.
Obviously, there is a fair bit of time between making the rough and finishing the artwork but I thought that it might be good to see how a spread turned out next to the sketch that started it.
Thanks again for following these posts over the past few days. I’ve had a blast sharing some of my process with you all. Thank you for all the great comments, they are always really encouraging to read and I really appreciate them.
If you haven’t got a copy of ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ yet -written by @smriti_halls_author and illustrated by me -it is available now from all good bookshops and via the Walker Books website. Also, you can follow me here on Instagram to see what else I’m up to @david_c_litchfield See you soon. David :)
