The stupa of the Borobudur Temple. - A stūpa (Sanskrit: स्तूप, "heap") is a mound-like or hemispherical structure containing relics. A stupa is intended as a shrine for the Buddha. - In Borobudur, the upper rounded terrace is filled with rows of bell-shaped stupas contained Buddha images symbolizing Arūpajhāna, the sphere of formlessness. In total central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa. The main stupa itself is empty, symbolizing complete perfection of enlightenment. - Borobudur was first thought more likely to have served as a stupa, instead of a temple. Sometimes stupas were built only as devotional symbols of Buddhism. A temple, on the other hand, is used as a house of worship. Borobudur, or Barabudur (Indonesian: Candi Borobudur, Javanese: ꦕꦤ꧀ꦣꦶꦧꦫꦧꦸꦣꦸꦂ, romanized: Candhi Barabudhur) is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, located in Central Java, Indonesia. - Build in the 9th century, the worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then the British ruler of Java, who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. The largest restoration project was undertaken between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, followed by the monument's listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. - This Mahayana Buddhist temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. It is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The Gunungan and Candi Borobudur (Borobudur Temple) - The gunungan (Javanese "mountain", "savory"), also known as kayon or kayonan (from kayu, "wood" or "tree") in Bali, is a figure in the Indonesian theatrical performance of wayang (a traditional Indonesian puppet show). A gunungan is a symmetrical-shaped figure of translucent parchment made of dried, firm beef skin, whose outline is pointed in Java and more rounded in Bali. - A gunungan is generally symmetrical, shaped like a mountain or like rounded ellipse in the case of Balinese kayonan. The Javanese gunungan takes the form of a mountain (which looks almost Candi-like). In a wayang performance, the gunungan is the first to appear on the screen and the last to appear before the end. Gunungan also marks transition between different screen and can also serve as a prop.
