16-year-old girl who was fatally shot by Fremont police was pregnant, authorities say.
A 16-year-old girl who was fatally shot by Fremont police during a robbery investigation was pregnant, authorities say.
The girl, who was a passenger in a stolen vehicle linked to a series of robberies, was in her first trimester of pregnancy, according to Sgt. Ryan Cantrell, a spokesman for the Hayward Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.
Cantrell declined to release the girl’s identity per department policy. However, the girl’s family identified her as Elena Mondragon.
On a GoFundMe Web page created for the girl, her uncle, Miguel Minjares, described her as a “witty, fun-loving girl.” He said the Antioch teen was “coldly shot” by police.
“Her family is feeling a pain that seems in this moment that will never go away,” Minjares wrote.
The shooting occurred at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday near Cal State East Bay in Hayward, about 12 miles north of Fremont, according to Hayward police.
Fremont police detectives were investigating a rash of robberies in the Bay Area and had traveled to Hayward, where they located a stolen vehicle believed to have been connected to the robberies, a police statement said.
When the detectives tried to stop the vehicle at an apartment complex in the 25200 block of Carlos Bee Boulevard, the driver instead rammed their police vehicle, according to Hayward police. Two Fremont detectives were injured.

Riverside mother charged with abandoning 2-year-old daughter in a grocery store.
A Riverside woman was charged with child abandonment Thursday after she left her 2-year-old daughter in a grocery store over the weekend, officials said.
Chiengkham Vilaysane, 31, faces a felony count of child abandonment and a misdemeanor count of child endangerment, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Riverside County district attorney’s office. She is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Riverside, he said.
According to police, Vilaysane walked into a Food 4 Less supermarket Sunday night in the 4000 block of Van Buren Boulevard with her daughter by her side.
At some point, the girl wandered off. Vilaysane continued shopping and never searched for her, said Riverside Police Det. Paul Miranda.
A good Samaritan spotted the girl and presented her to Vilaysane, who responded, “Oh, just leave her,” police said.
Vilaysane then paid for her groceries and intentionally left the store without her daughter, police said. She never reported the girl missing, Miranda said.
When police showed the girl a photograph from surveillance camera footage, she identified Vilaysane as “Mommy,” he said.
The girl is in the custody of the Riverside County’s Children’s Services Division. She appeared to be in good health and showed no obvious signs of trauma, Miranda said.
Police released surveillance video on Monday showing Vilaysane and the girl walking through the grocery store. Detectives were hoping the public would help them find Vilaysane.
The following evening, Vilaysane walked into a bank in Riverside in the 10300 block of Magnolia Avenue and was recognized by the teller from news reports. The teller notified police, and Vilaysane was arrested.

Dirt bike riders attack motorist on San Francisco highway, leaving him with a broken leg, CHP says.
Authorities are looking for a group of 10 to 15 dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle riders who harassed and assaulted a driver this week on Highway 101 in San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said.
Cellphone video shot by a witness shows the violent attack as it unfolded about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday near the Cesar Chavez exit, said Officer Vu Williams, a CHP spokesman in San Francisco.
The group of riders had been engaged in an illegal “sideshow” and were performing stunts. Their antics caused traffic to slow a crawl, authorities said.
When the driver of a white Toyota attempted to pass the riders, they boxed him in, Williams said.
The riders then began to ram and punch the man’s car.
“These guys don’t have a lot of regard for public safety,” Williams said. “They got no qualms about even riding on a sidewalk.”
When the motorist exited his Toyota to confront the riders, they surrounded him and began to punch and kick him, authorities say.
By the time officers arrived, the dirt bike riders were gone and the injured driver was being loaded into an ambulance.
The victim suffered cuts and a broken leg, Williams said.
Although there is cellphone video of the melee, authorities are having difficulty identifying the attackers. None of the motorcycles bore license plates and the riders wore helmets.
However, Williams said, the group’s actions were similar to other “sideshow activity” that officers have seen in the past in the Bay Area.

Kidnapping suspect is shot seconds after stabbing woman, LAPD says.
A kidnapping suspect was shot by Los Angeles police officers seconds after he stabbed a woman at the end of a car chase on Tuesday night, authorities said.
Shortly before 10 p.m., gang enforcement officers spotted a stolen truck that matched the description of a vehicle taken during an earlier car theft and kidnapping in the area of Imperial Highway and Croesus Avenue, according to Officer Irma Mota, an LAPD spokeswoman.
The officers chased the truck into Gardena, eventually disabling it with a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver in the 1400 block of S. Broadway, Mota said.
As the truck slid to a stop, the driver began stabbing a woman in the passenger seat with a large kitchen knife, according to Mota. The woman managed to break free, and officers opened fire on the driver, Mota said.
The woman and the suspect were both listed in stable condition as of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mota said.
No officers were injured, and the suspect’s identity was not immediately released. Police recovered the knife at the scene, Mota said.
Mota said the driver shoved the woman into the passenger seat of the truck at the time of the vehicle theft, though it was not immediately clear if the truck belonged to the woman, or if she and the suspect knew one another.

13-year-old girl in coma after being hit by falling tree during storm.
Teresa Johnston saw a lull in the storm Friday afternoon and decided to perform an act of kindness that by then had become a tradition.
The 13-year-old stepped out of her home in Irvine to walk the dogs for her elderly neighbor.
As the teenager walked across an open area in her Irvine condo complex, yellow umbrella in hand, wind gusts knocked down a 50 foot tree, which struck her.
She underwent brain surgery on Monday and was still in a deep coma Tuesday, said her father, Roch Johnston.
“The people in the neighborhood all call her sunshine,” Johnston said. “When [the rain] eased up, she wanted to run over and walk these dogs for an elderly lady. She loves her like a grandmother.”
At least five people died of drowning, electrocution or car crashes throughout Southern California as a result of the weekend’s storm, which meteorologists called the worst that the region had seen in years.
In Irvine, a neighbor heard the tree fall and called police, Johnston said. The neighbor put a pillow under Teresa’s head, covered her with a blanket and held an umbrella over her until firefighters came, the girl's father said.
Firefighters were able to pull Teresa out from under the tree without moving any branches or digging her out, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.
“It definitely had … created a major trauma,” Kurtz said.
Meanwhile Teresa’s family was inside their home, unaware that she was en route to the hospital. They started to get worried when she wasn’t back after an hour.
