Disaster or Delayed Gratification?
When Sims 3 came out in June of 2009, I was wholly enmeshed in the world of Sims 2. I had so many mods, DLC’s and stories going on that I just couldn’t possibly give it up yet as it was pretty new to me still. I had only been playing Sims 2 for about four months prior to the release of 3, and while I coveted Sims 3 like nothing I’ve ever coveted before? I just didn’t want to shell out another fifty bucks when I’d just went and bought about a hundred dollars worth of Sims 2 packs and stuff. Though I wanted 3… oh, I wanted it bad! Sims 2 ran its course until my husband’s pc could no longer handle everything I’d put into it; especially when it got the Blue Screen of Death. Alas, everything was deleted and it put me into such a funk that I just didn’t bother reinstalling, redownloading all that custom content and, well, you get the picture. So Sims 2 and all the packs sat in their cases collecting dust on my shelf until I finally got myself a refurbished Dell desktop. I mean, I was just so happy to have my OWN pc that I completely forgot all about installing Sims 2 on it, so it collected even MORE dust. Then… the magical moment happens, and I have an epiphany that was probably more due to seeing all these wonderful Meme’s based on Sims 3 glitches and whatnot. I went to Walmart a few nights ago, it was Thursday November 3rd and I had a paycheck in my hand eager to be cashed so I could finally… FINALLY get Sims 3. I thought to myself, ‘The game is probably cheaper now!’. Ha… They didn’t have just the BASE game, they had the Base game plus Ambitions and the Base game plus pets. And while I truly want to get Pets, too. Well, bills do need to be paid and I’m looking to spend more more than thirty dollars. Of course Walmart wouldn’t have just the base game! So hubby and I go home from Walmart with me being all dejected, and I’m looking all over online to find a cheap copy. The reason I couldn’t wait, I was off the next day… I planned on spending the entire day doing nothing but Simming. Hubby convinces me to wait from buying and downloading it from Amazon.com since he’s got about ten bucks in credits from GameStop. Even better, a thirty dollar game that I can get for twenty? Yes, please! I wake up Friday morning. I bide my time staring at my hubby in bed, willing him awake telepathically. Of course it doesn’t work and by the time 1pm rolls around… I’m practically jumping on the bed making him wake up so we can go to GameStop, I’ve waited long enough, TYVM! Naturally we’ve got other errands to run, and my newly acquired Sims 3 is burning a hole in my purse. About three hours later we get home and I pop that bad boy into the cd rom - nothing happens. It doesn’t read and I’m slowly getting pissed when I start to think that the computer place down the road sold me a refurbished pc with a cd rom that doesn’t read disks and I’m totally ready to go cuss their asses out. But no, I think logically and pop an older game in there which happened to be Zoo Tycoon. Computer reads the disk fine… I whine to hubby about it and he tells me that it probably can’t read the ISO file on the Sims 3 disk. He tells me to try buying and downloading it from Amazon. *Sigh* So I do. And it takes about two and a half hours to download. And then it takes what I think was probably two hours to install. I could be exaggerating here, but I WAS giving it the benefit of the doubt. So I get it all installed and I’m trolling my favorite custom content download sites, eager to get some new hairs and whathaveyou. The game finally installs! I go to click on the play button… It gives me a ‘Shader Model 2’ error. I look at the clock, I look at the error, I look at the back of the case to see what kind of video card this requires and I curse everything at this point. Finally I look up the local MicroCenter Mall website to see what kind of prices they have on Video cards and I balk. They’re looking pretty pricey, but I do see some that are relatively cheap. Let me explain to you something real quick: I have a really hard time spending money on myself. I can blow money on someone I love - No Problem. But when it comes to things I want or need, it’s the hardest thing in the world and I feel guilty as hell. Makes no sense, I know, but it is what it is. So I think to myself, okay… fine, I’ll break down and get what I think is going to be a thirty dollar video card so I can play this long awaited game. I grab the empty Sims 3 case and hubby and I drive twenty minutes to the computer center and start looking at cards and I’m even more delighted to see they have some NVidia cards on sale at a cheaper price. Oh Joy! So we wait for a sales person to help us and he’s asking questions about the computer and I’m just looking at him with a confounded expression on my face. I should have brought the tower with me to begin with and I’m sure feeling like an idiot. So we drive back home, unplug the tower and bring it back with us. Another 40 minutes wasted and by this time, it’s about 7:30PM. I’m getting more and more heated. So we take the tower in, the guy takes a look at the innards and says these magical words, “You not only need a video card, you also need a new power supply so the video card doesn’t burn out what power you do have but so it doesn’t also burn out your motherboard.” I take a deep breath to calm myself as he looks on his computer to see how much this will all cost. The video card winds up being fifty bucks and the power supply winds up being thirty with a ten dollar mail-in rebate. I… am a little ashamed to admit, that I flipped out a little bit and walked out of the store. I just couldn’t fathom paying an additional 80 bucks on myself, all for a game. At the time, I was sorely upset and angry and yes, I even cried a little because I’ve been waiting for this game for so long and I hate spending money on myself and damn it all, we have bills to pay. Now that I’ve had a few days to think it over, well… I guess I can wait two more weeks until my next check comes to upgrade my pc. Damn you Shader Model 2 error for dashing all my hopes and dreams… Ok, as you can see I do have a flair for the dramatic. *Grins* What surely felt like a disaster is a simple case of delayed gratification. It also goes to show that a 27 year old woman is allowed to have a hissy fit every once in a while, too. But damn it if this game isn’t just burning a hole on my computer, waiting for this damnable upgrade. Waiting, is just not my forte. But oh, will it sure be worth it. On a side note: I thought to myself, hey… I can just play Sims 2 until then! Wrong, same thing happened. I just can’t win for losing, eh? Lol!
Adobe Flash Player 10.2 Installation Error
Ever since Adobe released the 10.2 update for Flash Player, I haven't been able to upgrade. I would receive an error:
The installation encountered errors: No error information is available.
Here at work I run a dual monitor setup, and surprisingly it was UltraMon (desktop management software) that was preventing the Flash Player installation from working.
Closing the Ultramon applet was the trick. Using the direct Flash Player installer worked perfectly for me!
