Hanging with ERNEST Collective in St. John's, Portland. Learning about the thinkings behind their work 'Demos' which considers the empty Wapato Jail in Noryh Portland. ERNEST were brought to Portland by @c3initiative, which connects artists to communities. Here the flickering coyote portraits are bring shown at a community roundtable discussion. Coyotes go under fences. They move silently and regardless of prison perimeters. With imagination, we can reject jails, deny carceral logic, fight mass incarceration and abolish prisons. Having spent over 30 years on death row for a contested murder conviction, Mumia is one of America's most vital voices of social justice, bringing light to the invisible recesses and shrouded politics of the U.S. prison industrial complex. Jailhouse lawyer, journalist and activist. So many works. If he's done so much from behind bars, think how much he could do for a healthy society as a free man. #insteadofprisons

This is Martha. She travelled 9 hrs from San Diego to attend today's public hearing about solitary confinement in CA prisons at the state capitol, Sacramento. Her brother Luis Esquivel has been in the secure housing unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay for 13 years. I asked to take a photo because her T-shirt caught me eye. I admire her use of his portrait. The California Department of Corrections has never granted Martha visiting rights; she has not seen her brother in 13 years. #stoptortureca #insteadofprisons
