Authenticity

Real change doesn't come from the government or an external entity telling us something has changed. That comes from the hearts and minds of the people - living, breathing, feeling, human beings. If you want something to happen, YOU need to make it happen. No one will know there is an issue unless you make it one. Never settle for less, or wait for another to tell you that your authentic, that your dreams are real, that they are OK.

We need no stamp of approval in life.

I was strolling back to my house from the bagel store with bagels for my team. We had scheduled a Saturday morning meeting. Nine AM! And I was thinking what are the chances people show up on time? Not very high.

Layering I believe is the larger issue here. Often we are motivated with carrots and sticks instead of with what's underlying them. The biggest carrot of all is money. We pursue monetary success or financial security, instead of having a better understanding of the true ends in mind. Why is it we pursue money? To buy food or Ferrari's? If a healthy peaceful lifestyle is what we're looking for, 25 years of 70 hour work weeks and the stress that comes with is not worth the money when we lose our health along the way. Do we really want a tattoo?! Or just the kind of attention it will attract? Why is it we are in college or trying for a PhD? Because of some reward that will come of it, or because the pursuit of knowledge truly fulfills us? The solution isn't ignoring incentives and punishments all together and living totally spontaneously, although I would love to try that out and see what that lifestyle has to offer. I think there's a huge benefit to gaining an understanding of which incentives and punishments are influencing our actions, and asking the deeper questions of why we do what we do. I also think that carrots and sticks are losing their effectiveness in the work world as people become more self aware and intrinsically motivated.
