Wanted to talk about Fortune’s Weave Some More & Is It Coming Out Too Soon?
It’s 2026, and that means that Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave is gonna be released sooner than you may realize. I’m sure those who follow Fire Emblem have seen the leaked alleged date.
I’ll admit this is sooner than I’d expect (I was thinking perhaps a summertime release of June-July), but it’s also got some people in a tizzy. Some thinking that this is way too soon and people really are afraid of this being undercooked like Three Houses was.
Now look, as we know with Engage, the thing about video games is by now, they have to be DONE. There has to be a build of this game that is playable and shippable. Now could there always be polish applied? Of course. Engage was intended to be an anniversary title, but was held back on to be polished more and it definitely looks like it, and it was graded as a game long before it was released. So I think Fortune’s Weave as we are speaking is fundamentally done. Is it likely having finishing touches applied to it? I would hope so, but unless there is something truly wrong with its quality like a bug or graphic glitch, I do think this will still be released in 2026 before we know it.
Speaking of time it takes to make Fire Emblem games, I have seen a lot of people online continue to bring up that Fortune’s Weave is being made in response to Engage being a “failure” and that InSys is looking to recapture their previous success. I won’t lie and say the thought hadn’t occurred to me that FW was made in response to Engage, but as I’ve mentioned previously, Engage has sold over a million copies, almost shy of two million. While it didn’t have as long a tail as Three Houses, it definitely made its money back and is still more successful than any previous New FE era games.
To be honest, I think for Insys to really start sweating the series condition, we’d have to have a Tellius to Arcanea remake style run. Where not only Fortune’s Weave but like three Fire emblems after it just underperform. Like not even reaching a million.
Considering that Three Houses (and Engage as we found out they were developed at the same time) started development shortly after Fates released in 2015, it’s likely Fortune’s Weave was starting concept development after Three Houses and not Engage. It just doesn’t make sense to have to fully functional new Fire Emblem in this style in less than three years. It seems more likely that FW has probably been in the pipeline since 2020 (though I’m sure COVID didn’t help). And I think it’s probably had time to cook.
As for the whole “reaction to Engage’s critical reception” well like I said this was probably being conceptualized long before Engage was publicly reviewed. As much as we like to see the successive release of games and think that they build in a linear line, given the timeframe, it’s more likely that the gears for Fortune’s Weave was set in motion regardless of Engage’s success.
As for why they chose to make this a follow up to Three Houses, I can only speculate but while some people have said most FE games get multiple games in the same universe so this isn’t new, I disagree. I don’t think there’s any real rule or trend as to why Three Houses is getting a follow up, I speculate that the answer is a bit more simple. Insys saw home successful Three Houses was in its first year (remember this was one of the fastest selling FE games ever. Reaching over 3 million in copies sold by June of 2020 after being released in July 2019) and knew that they had to make some sort of follow up. This isn’t too surprising as we saw with Fire Emblem Fates, while Fates might not take place in the same universe as Awakening it’s impossible to deny the success of Awakening influenced the direction of Fates: pair up mechanic, keeping on Yusuke Kozaki as an artist, the all plot important mystery blue haired girl, the child mechanic, and the fact that they straight up have multiple characters and character look alike ls from Awakening in Fates.
InSys responded to success. And whether you hate Three Houses or love Three Houses, it is undeniable that it was a sales smash hit and critical hit. And so, Fortune’s Weave being some sort of follow up keeps in line with how InSys handled the success of Awakening with Fates. Now of course that has its downsides, as you may recall, Fates was heavily panned and was often criticized for implementing Awakening mechanics without understanding why they worked in the context of Awakening (Baby Dimension is still a meme to this day). That’s not to say Fortune’s Weave will be bad or will just be a rehash of Three Houses, it’s that it will still need to stand on its as a game and hopefully not fall into the trap of “well you liked this in this other game.”
Look I’ve talked about some of my reservations and hopes for Fortune’s Weave previously: I’m skeptical of Koei Tecmo seemingly not being involved, I’ve had issues with Nintendo franchises right now seeming like they’re just doing the most popular incarnation again and again, I don’t care for the harder dating sim aspect of Three Houses and would like it to not return, and I’d personally prefer this game to not have anything to do with Fodlan period and be its own world. BUT I’m still excited because there is seemingly no Avatar unit (at least not yet), I love the artstyle and aesthetic, I think building it around a gladiator tournament is great and honestly a lot more low key than the repeated continent size wars we’ve had, and the hub world being a whole city instead of a singles building is something I’ve been waiting for.
As of right now, I’m not too worried about Fortune’s Weave coming out as it is. Any extra time for a game’s development is always good, and I’d love for as much polish to be applied before release, but I think most of the story and gameplay elements are locked in. I want it to be good. I want every Fire Emblem to be good. I don’t think the franchise is in a position where they need to be afraid of an entires success. And while I do believe that FEFW is influenced by that 3H success, I do hope that it rises above just being the Three Houses follow up.

one of my favourite pastimes wrt the system is, tbh, Music: Psychoanalysis Attack Edition.
it's where you find a song that is in some way Very Much About one of your alters, and then you think very Pointedly at them for the duration of the song. The win condition for the initiant of this game is if you successfully manage to drag the alter you're targeting into the front room by the time the song ends, and bonus points are awarded for getting them into front. (points are taken away for using the game to bait someone into front so you can get out of stuff because that's just not fair.)
woooow Damian. Real subtle there bro. She totally can't tell we have a crush on her now, dummy
