     Grayson felt so completely out of place. He was given a week or so off from work to celebrate Thanksgiving, and without keeping his hands busy, the man was endlessly restless. Restless with an abundance of Thanksgiving leftovers his best friend had dropped off to him. Tapping his knuckle against the door of his neighbor, he sighed dramatically when they opened up. “Please help me finish these damn leftovers. I feel like I’m drowning in Thanksgiving food over here.”

       The stars were out and maybe it was a little late to be firing up the grill, but it was the only downtime Grayson had. He flipped one of the burgers on the barbecue pit and took a long drink of his beer. His body ached from pushing himself too hard daily. The man worked far too hard, but he didn’t mind it. It’s how he had that roof over his head. At the sound of his neighbor’s patio door opening, he looked over their small chain-link fence and waved a little. “You better come help me eat all this food. I’m not taking no for an answer.”

      Standing in the back of an art gallery, he hoped he blended in with the wall. Why did he come to this opening tonight? It included work of his ex-fiance’s, someone he hadn’t seen in over a year. The man regretted coming the moment he stepped in, but luckily the woman had failed to see him yet. He stood next to a table of free food, and that’s when he realized he looked as if he was working as a waiter. “Oh,” he told the stranger who approached, “I’m… no, I don’t work here. I’m just standing by the food because… well, y’know, free food.”
