if there was one person vincent hadn’t hoped to run into after the attack, it was marlene. she already knew far too much. the control he’d found himself under was paramount, and unwavering. he was choking on air so badly a cigarette felt like relief. “if you wish to say something. just get it over with.”

“marlene!” he grins, body lazily hanging from one of the arm chairs in the common room. maybe he had taken a few many of his own creations. the price seeming to be not going to bed. not that he minded, the stress of the baby had gotten to him far more than he could’ve anticipated. “beautiful lady, my mate. why are you up so late?”

one mustn’t underestimate the primal appeal to lose one’s self, lose it utterly. and in losing it be born to the principle of continuous life, outside the prison of morality and time. 

there was far too much noise inside, it gave him a headache. stepping into the cold air was doing little to soothe his aching bones, whole body craving something indistinct. shaking fingers leech into his pocket, plucking out a hand rolled cigarette and lighter to match. exhaling and crouching against the cold concrete wall, he made himself hidden. when suddenly a lurch of movement caught his attention. “miss mckinnon.. how can i help you?”

first to class and last to exit, this stratedgy seemed to work for him so far in avoiding both rosier and marlene. until now, at least. one, two, three, four, five. “your footsteps are loud, miss mckinnon. what do you want?”

usually, vincent was not a heavy smoker. but since the fight with evan, he’d completely lost his ability to control himself. he’d gone through twice as much tobacco in the past week than normal. and it all came down to that one little scrap, and the damn ring she now sported on her finger. “i can hear you from a mile away, marlene. clumsy steps.”
