The first Break and Make Workshops and Hackathon event organized by Intel in collaboration with hub:raum and with the support of the DeviceHub.net and Wyliodrin teams will take place at TechHub Bucharest, on Saturday and Sunday, March 28th (day one), respectively March 29th (day two) 2015. The competition is aimed at young entrepreneurs who are technology enthusiasts and programmers who want to build a startup. Participants must have good coding skills in order to participate in the competition.
“We expect young entrepreneurs passionate about technology and programmers who plan to begin a startup to join us in the Hackathon. The main areas of interest are design, software development and engineering. Our first programme of this kind is based on entrepreneurship and the idea of a programming dedicated weekend in a team building setting. Our goal is to bring together entrepreneurs and programmers in order to develop prototypes for viable commercial solutions”, stated Raluca Oltean, EMEA Higher Education Program Manager.
The schedule of the Break and Make event
On day one, Intel and hub:raum will provide participants two sessions of workshop and programming on the Edison development platform. Moreover, there will also be a teambuilding activity aimed at establishing the teams which will take part in the hackathon. On the second day of the hackathon, the teams will design a prototype based on their project and they will test its functionality before the final presentations, scheduled on Sunday. All projects will incorporate the Intel Edison development boards as a main component, together with sensors provided by third parties and the code developed during the hack through the night sessions. The complete schedule of the two-day event is available on the Break and Make website.
Winner(s) selection and awarding
The winners will be selected by a panel of representatives from the local community of developers, academia and journalists. The developed projects will be assessed based on the following criteria: innovation/creativity, business potential, user experience, technical difficulty and functionality. All the evaluation criteria are equally important.
The members of the winning teams will be awarded as follows: first prize - Edison development boards and a set of SMS Audio BioSport headphones; second prize - Edison development boards; third prize - Galileo development boards.
The Intel® Edison technology
The Intel® Edison platform is a solution designed to decrease the time needed to develop prototypes and the time to produce the connected devices, which will be the basis of the further industrial revolution. This new wave of devices will be a various collection of products designed for specific consumers and consumer needs.
The Intel® Edison platform was specifically designed for the developers of such devices - young entrepreneurs, willing to invent the future. The technology combines an adaptable and powerful hardware platform, and a flexible ecosystem, with extensive software compatibility and an online support environment.
Thanks to the solution provided by the Edison platform, imagination is the only obstacle that can stand in the way of innovation.
The Intel® Galileo technology
The Intel® Galileo Gen 2 development board is a development and prototyping tool, based on the Intel® architecture and compatible with Arduino*. It is mainly designed for developers, students and professors, as well as for electronic enthusiast makers.
Galileo is running Linux, but the applications can also be built using Arduino. Thus, Intel® Galileo manages to combine the advanced features provided by Linux and its extensive applications ecosystem, with the ease in developing provided by Arduino. Intel® Galileo is the first Intel development board exclusively Open Source - both hardware and software, which is important for developers and startups communities, that want to build product prototypes. When it comes to developing projects with minimum resources, but with multiple functionalities, Intel® Galileo is the best solution for many developers.
