It is free and when the creator makes the material, it will be protection by copyright automatically. In Australia, there is not registration system for this. Some situation, people can use the copyright material without permission for their personal use.
Copyrights is juts for limited time. It can be last a further 70 years after the death of the original creators death and in broadcast or publishing cases this time period extends to 50 years.
Copyright needs to protect the creator’s work as asset and protect their rights. If someone use the design without the original creator know about it, they can stop them with copyright which is proof for the person created original.
