Is there a preference for those with 4 A levels as opposed to 3?
Okay, so THIS is the only thing I can find in terms of official uni position. It’s from 2006, so take it with a pinch of salt, but what it essentially states is that three subjects are generally sufficient. Most arts students I know took three A-levels, so there doesn’t seem to be an admissions bias. They do, however, state that if you’re taking further maths, then you’d be expected to take it alongside three other A-levels, bringing your total up to four, which again, is kinda in line with what I’ve observed - most people I know who did further maths had four A-levels.
I wish to do medicine or a science related course at university, I'm starting A levels in a few days and my chosen subjects are Maths, chemistry, biology and psychology but I think I'm going to drop psychology. Do you think 3 A levels are better ( like do you think that I can focus more and spend time = better grade ) or 4
It depends on what you want to do! Some people love doing four A-levels because it allows them to study lots of different things, and to keep their options open. Others prefer three because you can focus more on each. Doing three doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do better than you would if you were doing four - again, it depends on you as a person. If you’re organised and think you’ll be able to juggle the workload + studying for exams, then go for it. If you think you’ll struggle, then maybe opt for three.
I don’t know if this is an option at your school, but if you’re not sure whether or not you’ll be able to handle the workload, then start off with four and, if it gets too much, drop down to three (no shame whatsoever, loads of people do this)!
