I am seriously really annoyed right now...

...because I continuously find that people think chickens are stupid.

They aren't. I know they aren't. The problem is that it's such a common belief that they aren't intelligent that no one stops to think about what makes them stupid from a scientific and behavioral perspective.

So this post? Is going to be a rant about chickens.

After researching this for about an hour or so, I realize that there is a lotlotlot I could talk about. So I’ll have to come back to my argument about sentience/intelligence later. What I will do, though, is prove my peer and instructor wrong.

First off, I'm going to address a topic that my instructor brought up. Yes, my instructor. I'm taking an intro Histopathology course during Vetward Bound, and during it he agreed that chickens were stupid. When I asked him why he thought that, he replied with: "they peck each other!"

There's a reason for that. There are two different kinds of pecking. One is referred to as aggressive pecking. Aggressive pecking is what everyone always talks about and is also known as cannibalism. The other kind of pecking is investigative pecking, which is feather pulling or picking at another chicken's skin. Investigative pecking is used as a social exploration. This can also be used to define what is called a "pecking order," which is the relative ranking occurring between animals of the same species when they live in close proximity. It's the second type of pecking, if done a bit too harshly (which is quite easy to do, since chickens have thin and delicate skin), that can lead to cannibalism.

What I'd like to point out is that every website I've looked into states that domestic chickens are notorious for aggressive pecking. They say nothing about wild poultry. This wouldn't happen if they weren't kept in such small quarters and/or were given proper opportunity to forage. They don't peck at each other just because. There's a reason behind what they do. If you see chickens aggressively pecking at each other? They're most likely stressed. Not stupid. You're stupid for letting the destructive behavior continue.

Now. A friend in my class said that they go by instinct, which makes them stupid. And she is partially right. Chickens are quite instinctual; they are definitely a flight species. However, that does not make them stupid. And just because they largely go by instinct does NOT mean they can’t learn. A study done in 2000 showed that lame chickens, when presented with food that contains painkillers versus regular food, ate more of the PK food than the regular food. Meanwhile, the healthy chickens stuck to eating the regular food and couldn't care less about the PK food. Domestic chickens actively seek pain relief. That doesn’t sound dumb to me.

No, I'm not done with this topic. But I am done for tonight. If you ever doubted that I am intensely intrigued by chickens, here is your proof.

Another Note: The thing I find most upsetting is that people tend to go off their personal experience when it comes to determining the intelligence of chickens versus the science and reasoning behind the behavior of chickens. It really angered me today because it was clear that both my peer and my instructor were doing just that, and they are both scientists; my instructor graduated from veterinary school and works in a pathology lab, and my peer was recently accepted into veterinary school and graduated from undergrad with a science degree. Yet they BOTH chose to go off personal experience instead of scientific data. They should know better.
