In a bad mood, Hakyeon’s cornered the first person he could find that wasn’t all chummy with Lee Jinki, senior rider. He’d expected to be promoted this year, to finally put him in the place he deserved alongside the other rider, but the council had apparently thought otherwise. So, now with irritation that needs venting, Hakyeon does so by talking shit about Jinki to a younger rider. He’s seen Joongki following Jinki down to the caverns, and then out to the skies for training, and Joongki always looked so morose about it to Hakyeon. With that he figured it good enough to start into his tirade. 

“-seriously, telling me what to do. I used to help him in training. Hell, I saved his ass from dying plenty of times. Yeah. As apprentices he wasn’t all that, constantly throwing himself off his dragon like some spastic suicide-”

He pauses long enough to add in a derisive snort, before pressing on with more jealousy fueled gossip. 

“He can’t even shoot a bow properly. How can anyone be a senior rider without that skill?”

When Hakyeon gets himself prepared for the day, he does so with an extremely conscious eye. Just as much as he’s known for having a hawk eye as an archer, when it comes to his own looks he can be just as detail oriented. Clean cut and well fitted. Without a single button or lace out of place. That’s the Hakyeon one will find within the halls of the castle. Witnessing anything less than a well put together, straight backed, confident shouldered individual is merely a myth at this point in his dragon riding career. 

Of course, this particular approach to appearance maintenance isn’t just for show, it also seems to earn Hakyeon a level of respect - or perhaps intimidation - from the younger riders. Because of his demanding and sometimes sharp attitude that goes so in tandem with the idea that he’s always on his game, Hakyeon is generally left uncontested when it comes to training. True, he does have to help out with apprentices now and then, but generally he’s left to his own devices unless he seeks another out to accompany him. Waltzing up to Hakyeon and just asking to join in simply doesn’t seem to be done, not with his critical eye. So, just like most any other day where he’s set aside a regimen for honing his skills on his feet instead of in the saddle, Hakyeon continues his training in archery. This misty morning finds him on the edge of one of the stronghold’s cliffs, shooting at targets Nerezathe tosses into the air for him in quick succession. Switching hands, Hakyeon trains for rapid fire accuracy with both the left and the right, as well as handling multiple arrows in one shot. Where Nerezathe simply seems to be having fun tossing the clay targets into the air for her rider, Hakyeon’s face is set in a determined expression, his focus leaving him oblivious to anyone nearby.

There are few things in the world Hakyeon can compare to this: flying and maneuvering alongside another until its almost a seamless pattern of twists and turns. Flying with Nerezathe alone certainly gave Hakyeon everything required, but working alongside another member of his team in a way that just seemed to fit, despite how unexpected they might seem, that was just the icing on the cake. 

Alongside the larger dragon and her rider’s battalion-style weapon wielding, Nerezathe and Hakyeon might seem overshadowed, perhaps even dwarfed. But in their training the differences between them only seem to work to an advantage, allowing them to cover angles that were previously more open to attack. Nerezathe herself had figured out a unique system with Ysera, allowing the larger dragon to snatch up the smaller with its clawed feet mid air, only to then hurl Nerezathe into an accelerated speed a dragon in regular flight couldn’t keep up with. It was often risky, pushing the envelope, but its just what Hakyeon and Nerezathe loved best, the whipping wind singing in their veins all the more for how dangerous a tactic might be even with its greater rewards. 

Today in their practices, Hakyeon is striving to complete a new tumble with Nerezathe, thanks to Ysera’s help once again as the small black dragon uses the larger green reptile’s whipping tail for extra speed boosting. Things don’t go perfectly to plan though, as is often with training unusual techniques like this, and while the riders both hang onto their bonded during attempts to take out targets of their own, it seems that one of Hakyeon’s arrows has gone awry. Unknowingly, he’s gotten a bit too close to his companion rider’s weapon, and snagged the chain with his hurtling bow to whip it right out from the younger’s grasp. Its up to Seulgi to inform the more experienced rider of his mistake, as Hakyeon continues on without notice in his training. . .
