If not for Erielle, Gabe never would have given a d--- about Valentines Day. He did though, of course, because it was her birthday. But now that they were dating, he felt like he had to care even more. Valentines Day was a big deal to girls, and he wasn’t going to let their first one together be a disappointment to his girl. He’d done as much research as he could handle (too many pink hearts and pictures of couples kissing made him a little sick) and was about to go all out, buy her chocolate and roses and a giant stuffed bear when he stopped and t h o u g h t about it. This was Erielle, his best friend, not some hypothetical girl from a magazine article, and he was going to get her the perfect gifts.
He scanned the crowd for her as soon as he got to school, and spotted her quickly enough. Nervousness bubbled up inside him, but Gabe pushed it down as well as he could. Smiling shyly, he leaned down to kiss her cheek while pressing a small box into her hand. “Happy birthday, Erielle.” Inside the box was a necklace with the constellation Orion stamped onto a pendant. It seemed like a good gift; hopefully she’d like it.

Gabe sits down and looks directly at his new partner, golden gaze too intense but he doesn’t realize it. “I’m Gabe Richards. I’m not sure what you’ve heard about me, but I can assure you that I will actually do my part, and probably more, on this project. Even if I still don’t understand your earth history very well.” An unconscious, frustrated glare is tossed at the textbook between them. He did so well in school back home, but here he’s clueless. He’s doing everything he can to make up for his lack of knowledge, though.
A few weeks had passed since that first date with Alice, the cheerleader. There had been more dates, more kisses, more nights when she invited him to stay and he politely turned her down. Gabe was happy enough. She was nice. She was pretty. He enjoyed spending time with her. But something about it felt wrong, and it had taken him this long to figure out what the problem was.
It terrified him. What he’d done this afternoon, what he was about to do, could potentially ruin the best relationships he had. But it had to be done. Heart pounding as he sat in his car after school let out, Gabe texted Erielle.
[text] We need to talk. Outside of school. [text] Meet me at the park in 30.
He threw his phone into his backpack, too terrified to see her response, and drove to the park. It only took 10 minutes, but he needed to be mentally prepared. He checked his phone when he got there, his pulse a rush in his ears.

No one could deny that this is Gabe’s element. Where else would the senator’s golden son thrive? He’s surrounded by some of the most important people in the country, greeting friends and strangers and making connections. If they don’t know his name when the night begins, they will when it’s over.
To him, a party like this is about so much more than having a good time. When he catches an old lady’s napkin before it hits the floor, he’s endearing himself to her entire family. By mentioning his flawless grades to the senators, he makes himself a desirable intern. He’s not trying to be cold-hearted, but he knows how to get what he wants and is willing to work for it.
However, as the night passes, Gabe can’t help but notice the attractive blonde. There’s a glimmer of familiarity in her face, and he needs to know who she is. Straightening his suit coat, he makes his way to her. “You’ve been staring,” he smirks.

He wasn’t sure if it was luck or fate that had brought them together — but Gabe didn’t care. They needed each other now. They pulled each other up when the other stumbled, took turns on watch, fought together. He couldn’t imagine facing this d i s a s t e r without Nicole.
They had a formation now; Nicole and Jared at the front, Teresa behind them, and Gabe in the back to watch behind them and make sure Teresa didn’t get left behind. That’s the way they stand now, as they walk through a gate into their new sanctuary. He doesn’t let his guard down. Not for a second.
Gabe touches Teresa’s shoulder as he steps forward to hear Nicole better. “Of course not, I’m not stupid. The only people I trust are you and Teresa and Jared. We can rest but I’m not going to relax yet.”
“I-It’s nothing, I’m okay.”(Nicole)

“Shut up.” He isn’t good at this, he never has been. Gabe has never known what to do when people cry but he finds himself wrapping a hesitant arm around Nicole, pulling her against his chest. “It’s obviously not nothing. People who are okay don’t cry.” He pauses, grasping for something comforting to say. “If you need me to scare anyone off, I will.”

Never once in his life has Gabe regretted the business trips he has to go on with his father. He likes traveling, he likes the meetings, he likes making connections. But now, he has something he likes even more that he has to leave behind—Erielle. Their friendship has morphed into something different, better, and it leaves him missing her even more than he normally does. That’s why he’s asked her to meet him so soon after his flight lands. He barely has time to drop off his bags and say hi to Teresa, much less shave and change his clothes, before he’s driving to the park. Their park. He remembers fondly the day he was finally brave enough to admit his feelings for her. A grin breaks through his normally stern face when he sees Erielle waiting. Gabe is jet-lagged and exhausted but that doesn’t stop him from bounding toward his girlfriend and wrapping his strong arms around her. “Hi.” His voice is quiet as he presses his cheek against her hair. “I missed you.”
