Paperwork is piled up, the office is warm and bright, and all Tsunade can do is raise a brow at him. The beach sounded perfect compared to sitting in a stuffy office all day.

Plus it was Naruto.

She rarely could say no to him when it was requested like this. So, Tsunade found herself already agreeing mentally to the beach. Something that would probably end up as a trip rather than just a day out. They both deserved it.

“Let’s go find my swimsuit unless you already sneaked onto the Senju compounds again and got everything you wanted, knowing I’d say yes.”

Sometimes, not very often because that would lead onto a dangerous path, Tsunade would think about what would have happened to Naruto if she had stepped in sooner. The boy was her family, at least she had claimed him as her family. The Uzumaki name spanned just like the Hyuuga.

“If you keep it up I won’t be getting done with my paperwork anytime soon which means I won’t be sending you on any missions. Can’t you go harass Sakura or Kakashi?” Her work was piled up and even if she welcomed the distraction Shizune wouldn’t when it came to being the Hokage. “I’ll make it up to you, whatever you want, if you just be quiet.”

“You don’t have to go sneaking around, you know that right?”

It's Mother's Day so she knows what that means. Flowers straight from the Yamanaka Flower Shop picked out personally by Naruto. He gives them begrudgingly at first, pout and all, but then smiles brightly.

Tsunade takes the flowers from him, holding back the bright sunny smile she knows she could easily shoot back. She’s not sure when this random tradition started but it’s one of her favorites. The flowers have changed over the years, each new year seemingly added in complexity showing that Naruto himself had grown.

For a brief moment she wonders if he knows about the dozens and dozens of flowers that are tucked in between pages of her favorite books and books she won’t open at random. Tsunade won’t say anything about it though. It’s her own little secret, one she wasn’t willing to tell anyone really.

One more second she takes in the flowers, finally letting a small smile to break through. “Thank you Naruto. They’re beautiful this year.”

Tsunade rolls her eyes at him, reaching to ruffle his hair. “Sure sure Naruto. You know what? I think you need to go to bed.” She would tell him ghosts weren’t real, they aren’t. But it felt like a lie and made her tongue as heavy as lead. Ghosts of the past haunt her all the time.

“I think it’s just a figment of your imagination.”

“What? Why are you blaming me brat?” Tsunade said, a touch of a smile lifting her lips up, showing that she isn’t offended by the claim. “Besides Kakashi was he last Hokage. Not me.” Which was true. Shizune made sure she did her work... for the most part. Then she often did it without prompting late in the night as well when all was silent.

“It’s payback I guess from all the times you interrupted me, huh.” She had a full grown smirk now.
