Frames and Structures / Interior Lining and Finishing

Building an in-situ wing-wall running up to a raking ceiling. Wall was built in relation to kitchen plan to allow for cabinets, etc. to be built around it. Wall also frames around the tight staircase and had a 39° slope to prevent anyone from hitting their head when using stairs. Frame was made using h1.2 treated 90x45mm pine timber with 90mm galv hot dip nails. Once posioton of frame had been worked out and marked in accordance with kitchen plan we used a laser level to plumb a mark up on the ceiling to position our top plate correctly.

Before ceiling was framed we installed extra nogs between ceiling battens for fixing for our top plate. Frame was then lined with untreated 90mm groove ply. Skirting, scotia and beads were then fixed in to position.

Interior 150mm grooved ply fixed at 150mm centres  with 38mm brad nails as required from manufacturer with maxi bond adhesive. 90mm trim - architraves, scotia, skirting and vertical sheet join battens.

Cleints requested 150mm spaced grooved ply which was not in stock so we had to groove the ply ourselves. We used 12mm untreated eco ply and set up a jig to groove each sheet at 150mm centres efficiently. Before we could start installing sheets we had to install eco glass wool insulation and ensure sub trades were ready (plumber pressure tests, electrician had run wires, etc.) We also drew up a ‘rough’ lighting plan to make it easier for electricians to cut into ply lining for down lights. Painters advised us to prime 150mm back or sheet perimeter and edges to prevent any moisture that could possibly compromise the ply. We also spent some time on marking out for sheets to ensure minimal waste although with old renovations like this one its sometimes unavoidable with the irregular dimensions of rooms not suiting the standard sheet sizes we use today.

Making Jambs for open kitchen cupboard. 

Checked floor level to make sure both sides of jambs would be same size. I measured the opening and allowed for 5mm for sides and 10mm for top piece. Joins were face/edge mitres and I pre made the jambs on the floor then fitted it inside the opening. Before fitting I plumbed one side then fixed the jamb of to this and worked my way around packing and screwing off. I made sure jambs were flush with the gib on both sides and used the rip saw to rip the jamb timber to this size before joining it together. I used untreated finger joined pine for the side jambs and a spare piece of facia timber that we had left over for the top. Once jambs were fixed in place I made a 3mm quirk and cut and fixed architraves to this on both sides. Once architraves were on I then could finish the skirting in the cupboard area.

Coping/scribed mitre joins for skirting.

Some of the architraves required rebating to allow them to sit nicely over the jams and gib. - This was due to windows/jams not being set flush with the gib.

In the bathroom I had to a return join that will have a hardie glaze (shower lining) butted into it. Return join is used to hide the end grain and leave a tidy finish.

Installing architraves and skirting with untreated finger-jointed single bevel pine.

Using 50mm brad nails (penetrate through double gib) & PVA glue

Face/edge mitre joins for architraves. 

Coped/scribed mitre for skirting internal corners.

Running mitre joins for skirting along walls were beds will hide the join. This was to maximise the amount of offcuts I was getting when running full pieces.

Replacing james hardie glaze shower lining. I had to take photos of all showing fixings and hardware - with measurements to ensure everything goes back in the right place. (especially for WC hand rails)

Gibing bedroom around existing architrave, scotia and skirting trim. We installed small batten between gib and trim to create a tidy finish without removing trim.

Matching skirting to exisiting bedroom with un-even floorboards. I had to find a median and scribe skirting board to fit with minimal gap to floor. I ended up having to add a ripping to the middle of board for it to fit nicely.
