Hi! My first language's spanish and we too use the ? without a space (also we use ¿/¡, as in ¿"question"? because in spanish the entonation of a question/exclamation starts with the first word) The space thing pre "?" was a printing thing because character spaces were important and adding a space meant wasting it. At least, that's the version one of my teachers gave us, back in high school. Did this help?
