Bonding
For internturnederika
It was an oddly freeing sensation, sitting on the top of Josie's trailer. The dented metal roof had quickly become one of Marcus's favourite spots, especially at night. The stars and void stayed steadfast above him, and he took comfort in that.
He'd often sigh as he looked upward, thinking far too much about too many things. This night was the same as all the others. Another sigh, another longing gaze up at the unfairly stable stars.
Climbing up was easy enough, and Marcus was guaranteed to be alone... Usually, that was the case. Tonight, there was another figure perched under the night sky, and by the looks of it, she had wings as well.
Marcus was sure he'd seen her before, running around town before she'd been chosen. Vithya, her name was, right? The little intern that had so quickly been yanked from her mortal coil to fulfill a greater purpose. Just like him. He crept over and sat next to her, settling in without a word and content to remain that way.
Vithya, on the other hand, had noticed a pair of one of a kind golden wings out of the corner of her eye, and had fluffed hers outward to the fullest degree. She stared directly at the former billionaire, gaping at him and wondering just why in void's name he was sitting next to her. Her one-sided staring contest lasted for a while longer before her unknowing opponent finally spoke.
"Didn't know y'came up here too, kiddo." Marcus glanced at her, kicking his feet off the edge of the trailer like a child by a lake's edge. "Real nice, ain't it."
Vithya nodded, stammering out a "O-Oh yes" before falling quiet again, playing with a wayward feather. "What are you doing here?" The question came as more of a squeak, and she winced.
Marcus shrugged absently, shaking out his hair. "Always come up here or whatever. Jus' kinda quiet an' stuff. S'not like I can just ask m'sister to hang out anymore or somethin'." He frowned and let out a halfhearted little chirp. "Or anybody, I guess."
He turned to her with a half grin, laughing as if to dispel his own tension. "That ain't true, I got you now. Or uh, if y'wanna or whatever. Y'know. Hang out."
Vithya blinked at him, a slow grin spreading across her face as she nodded.
Marcus's smile widened in response, and within minutes the two of them were chattering excitedly back and forth about anything and nothing. They were just happy to have someone to talk to, aside from Josie's idle tea chats and the droning from the radio.
Between the laughs and various threads of gossip between them, the two Erikas finally felt something that had been so hastily taken from them begin to trickle in again.
They felt like they existed. And even if it was only to each other, that was all that they needed.
So martyrs are traditionally pictured with the means of their death, and that gave me this headcanon that in the NVCR Station they just have a room of stained glass windows depicting all the interns and how they died. (Naturally, Vithya's is shrouded in a dark cloth.)
Various Night Vale Angels by ErinPtah
By popular demand: angels in the His Dark Materials AU! When a human ascends, they merge with their daemon into a single body and take on physical characteristics of their daemon's settled form, because it's cuter that way. Angels have different levels of visibility depending on how strong they are. (Xaphania was totally visible; Baruch and Balthamos were just shimmers in the air.) I've taken artistic license here and drawn them all as extra-strong so you can see the details. Erika: Very handsome birb. Elegant and fluffy. Has all the dollars, thus, most important birb in town. Erika: Wouldn't mind wearing clothes for modesty reasons, but it's hard when your body has giant furry parachute-like flaps stretching from your wrists to your knees. Erika: Acted as personal guardian angel for Dana that one time. MIA since.
