Heartbreak. Or the whole concept of the broken heart.

Philosophically, I could talk about it as the sudden destruction of an internal relation; a cognitive event that, as it proceeds out wards, disrupts all other cognitive events; or the tendency of a provisional self to seek to hold permanent a relation that has fallen away, resulting in suffering.

What, ultimately, heartbreak is, is literally that: the shattering of our inner-most selves by a traumatic event. Subsequently, as per this image of shattering, we are left to reconstruct our selves, at least provisionally, in the absence of something that was ultimately an integral part of our inner life. Now, this notion of shattering is interesting, especially when we think about the language used socially when trying to motivate people to recover.

"Get over it," they will say; "move on," they admonish; "you'll be back to normal," they'll recommend. All of this language seems not to grasp the fact that, if something is shattered, generally the pieces don't fit back together as well: they often need a barrier between one another to keep them from grinding against one another. Further, pieces may be lost, too broken to ever fit back the same.

Turning to this thing about internal relations, a relation is internal to us when we could not be what we are without that thing to which we are related. Where other people are concerned, I'd like to point towards a Bergsonian understanding: an internal relation is one that when we enter into it, both the past and the future are refigured in such a way as to change our entire perception of the world.

Love is a king of internal relation that does exactly what Bergson says: when we fall truly, deeply in love with someone, we literally cannot imagine life without them, or the relationship, we cannot conceive of how we lived our lives prior to them, nor how we will get by without them. Love, literally reconfigures the past and the future in a very specific way.

Now, when we're heartbroken, that internal relation is snatched away from us, and our sense of self (in the Buddhist interdependent sense) collapses in on itself. The relation causes us to question how we will survive the future, who we are, and how we can be who we are without that relation which sustained us. The fact of the matter is that heartache is the awareness, the perception of a vanished relation that had colored all the other relations in our lives. Without it, our lives are darker.

What does this have to do with the concept of "getting over it," "getting back to normal," and "moving on?" Everything. The loss of an internal relation, changes the way the world is viewed by the one who has lost the relation: as posited in the Bergson example, it reconfigures the way the world appears to us. More than that, even if we could put our "selves" back together, and "move on," we could never get back to a point prior to the heartbreak.

Why? Because we have lost a relation that supported our concept of a provisional self, that defined us in a sense. Without that internal relation of love, we could never be who we are when we had that relation. We can approximate that person, we could pretend to be that person again, but we'll, honestly, never ever be able to be the person we were before we were in love.

Still, knowing all of this doesn't make it hurt less.
