This is a rough edit of the internal space film. I am aware that the sound needs more balancing and editing. Nothing like that has been done yet. I will be layering the sound with background sound thta I have recorded seperately.. so it will blend and flow more smoothly.
The reason I chose to shoot in black and white was almost instinctual. It was just something I wanted. But there are numerous aesthetic and practical reasons I chose this.
Part of the reason is I wanted to emphasis the density and heaviness of internal space. I am emphasising the feeling of the 'internal' which is already going to be more muted, dark and dense compared to being outside. But also Even ifI did external space aswell I might stay with black and white because the different between dark and light would be more noticeable in black and white. Also a lot of great documentary photography I have seen is in black and white partly because it is much simpler and cheaper to process and print b&w film at home.. than color.. so I have always liked this effect.. and wanted to try and get some of that effect in the film, one of the beautiful things about DSLR video, is that you can get slightly more photographic effects than with other video cameras.
I also ilke the density that can be achieved when shooting in black and white. you can really play with light and shadow.. contrast and exposure more than you can with color.
Some other practical benefits to black and white is that I don't have to worry as much about different times of day, lighting sources and color tone that I would do with color. I mostly have to worry about the intensity and texture of light/surfaces. Also I feel it will be easier to make it work together as a theme, rather than having lots of very seperate looking footage.
