Television no more the only platform for aspiring artists: Shantanu Moitra
Music composer Shantanu Moitra feels television is no longer the sole option for aspiring artistes as youngsters have started breaking the Internet to garner praise and support for their performances.
Moitra, however, admitted that channels like YouTube and other podcast platforms have been flooded with music videos and clips, making it difficult for the experts to choose from the vast talent pool.
"Television is not the only hope for aspiring artistes anymore. Ten years back, a budding performer had to approach a TV studio, but he or she has independent choices now. That, in a way, has also increased competition," the national-award-winning music composer told PTI on Wednesday.

Asked if the present Bollywood numbers were as popular as the ones released in the 70s and 80s, he said music directors work under various constraints these days.

Shamelessly just linking to this article on cracked.com (such an awesome site) because its exactly the kind of thing I'd want to write on this blog if I had the time and resources! But I really think its message is very important so I'm going to summarize (and paraphrase) it. And then add a couple of points of my own. As the article says - we're becoming prone to just reading headlines so here is a list of the main ('scientific') reasons those guys at cracked.com think the internet is changing us intrinsically:
On the internet you can easily mute the opinions of those you don't like/don't agree with and create 'thought bubbles' consisting of the voices of people sharing similar thoughts. They say that fish swimming around in curved bowls have a very warped perspective of life. Are you sure you aren't in a bowl or bubble of your own?
Bad/mis-leading information now has a fantastic medium to spread and even diversify itself. Its like a global game of Chinese Whispers where everyone's playing and almost everyone can add their own bits and pieces. Another aspect of this is that bad news, in particular poor experiences, come to light much more quickly. Think about your last visit to the doctor - how much more likely were you to blog/FB post/generally rant about having had a bad time than if the experience beat your expectations. I mentioned this earlier but I want to say it again - its becoming more and more important for us to be able to sift through all the information that's coming our way and strip the rubbish from the real, important stuff.
And on the dividing us front - keep in mind that as much as 66% of the world's people do not have access to the internet. They have never seen a meme, YT or stalked their exes on FB! There is a ton of research being done on this so called 'Digital Divide'. Just think about how much easier it is for a student to do his/her science project with the internet than for a kid who doesn't have access to the world wide web. Is it fair for the latter to not get as good a grade?
4/4/2012 Riddle me This...
So far my blog has just been me telling you how great the internet is for spreading social awareness and how it isn't a passive experience of having information forced upon you like TV or radio. Reflecting on this I think it would be a bit silly, to say the least, if I didn't atleast present the opportunity to interact with my blog after preaching how interactive the internet is.
So riddle me this tumblr readers: In your opinion/experience how has the internet changed the way you see the world/has it at all/have you even noticed?

The future is here. And it looks smart, clean and transparent. Or does it?
This week Google uploaded a teaser video show-casing the work they're doing on Artificial Intelligence glasses. If you haven't watched that video yet, please do. Not only because its pretty cool, but also because the rest of this post will not make any sense otherwise!
A few things I'd like to point out here if I may:
Consider the 'conversation' the protagonist and his friend have upon meeting up one fine day. "Shall we meet up?" "Yes, at 2." "Are you here yet?" "Cool, let's go get a coffee." The hero checks-in at the coffee place, picks up a coffee, and they part ways! OK so maybe a mundane conversation between two friends wouldn't fit in with this quick video but its a well documented fact that our conversations are getting shorter and shorter. And this video with its open ended title of 'One day...' only supports that view. But then again maybe conversations are getting crisper? In any case, thanks to the internet and smartphones, they're certainly getting a lot more diverse. I for one can be found Whatsapping a friend in NY, while commenting on the FB post from a friend in Australia, all while waiting for a friend a little closer home to call [and killing my phones battery life in the process!].
There's a million blog posts about how technological advances are making the possibility of the Terminator movie story line coming soon to a city near you more and more plausible. And one may say that this video contributes to that. Imagine if instead of showing the guy in the video that Strand Books is only a short walk away, the glasses were to recommend a taxi service (that's advertising with Google of course!). My guess is in the world of the video, the hero would just say yes! Once again my take on it is, if we all stay aware and don't just accept things blindly, we'll be fine. What do you guys think?
And finally, the glasses even know where the music section is within the store? Surely this will require Home View! As the name implies, one (door)step beyond Street View! Watch this hilarious video for the German's take on it!
