I hope YouTube knows their new way of censorship is going to inspire a whole new wave of elsagate content and predators taking advantage of younger kids through bypassing content restrictions. AI isn't going to be able to stop content slop and badly disguised fetish content from reaching children on the platform.
And the ID verification thing? This is a terrible idea. Data breaches happen all the time (even with YouTube) so how do you expect to keep those on your platform safe when you're in possession of all their IDs and you somehow manage to spill the metaphorical bag containing those IDs on the ground in the middle of a busy street????? This is like the Tea controversy all over again.
For those who are confused why all of this is bad, this is not about kid's safety on the internet. There are ways to keep kids safe that doesn't involve spotty AI algorithms, or involve giving your personal info out to big companies (even though you willingly do that without even noticing anyways). This is a problem concerning censorship.
There are no positives in this, you can think "oh, maybe it'll stop child exploitation better!! You know, considering that YouTube is making it so that only adults can apply for monetization" I don't need to explain why this logic is deeply flawed, do I?? The parent is still able to get the money, still able to exploit their child, and still none of the money goes to the child.
Now, I don't think it's exactly realistic to say "everyone should boycott YouTube" because that's kind of the main platform I personally consume content on, and it's not gonna be easy, but I'm going to make the choice to boycott YouTube once all of this goes into effect.
Unfortunately, I also use their music service, so I'll have to find a workaround for that (before you say Spotify, they're having the same issue that YouTube is having and is arguably matched in evilness when it comes to a company not giving a fuck about their content creators or users), but I'm really really not surprised this is all happening right now. If any of you are interested in learning more about the internet's current censorship crisis, Lexitorias put out a video about it very recently that I watched and informed me about how banking companies such as Visa and MasterCard and Christian fundamentalists are pushing censorship by threatening to withdraw from other companies' payment processes and heres another I highly recommend.
All of this is saddening and it just means that the public needs to make the conscious decision whether it's worth it or not to even stay on YouTube. I want to support my favorite content creators, but I don't want to support Google or YouTube. I may have to switch over to Patreon but at the end of the day we need an alternative platform. All the alternatives that are currently out there happen to be overrun with gore videos and certain forms of content I don't want to get into but on the brightside there are places to turn, just not exactly the same as what we're used to.
also I'm aware YouTube already made a Twitter response, I don't plan on addressing it because it's not notable, it's the same thing they've been saying for years with added: "AI is better than human censorship" which, it's not as we all know, and this just means that we need to leave YouTube sooner than later, due to the insane usage of AI that is absolutely destroying our environment.
Rant is over and done, you should switch over to the indie web btw!!!! It's awesome over there
TLDR: WE NEED A YOUTUBE ALTERNATIVE NOW
