First impressions of week one: 

I met all my colleagues from the different departments, did already some smaller tasks, such as preparing a seminar as well as some research, and I found out my bachelor thesis topic. The department for further education offers seminars for dieticians. I will also get the opportunity to take part in two seminars with the topics “Malnutrition” and “Therapy of Diabetes Type 1 and 2”.

Why I'd make the best summer intern ever

As a university student I know all too well the stress and competition for summer jobs and internships. It is my hope that the reasons provided below would be found and read, and that prospective employers will see that by hiring me, they’re hiring more than just a summer student worker.

  Reason Number 1: My Impeccable Memory

Now, on paper that may seem like something that could be just mildly handy but I’ll explain to you why it makes me a must-have employee of the summer. First off I’m sure you’re tired of sending people out on coffee runs who can never recall if you wanted a Tall or a Grande Americano as soon as they leave the building. With me that will never be an issue as I have the incredible ability to remember multiple coffee orders all up to twenty words long! You wanted a Grande-non fat-no water-double drizzle-half sweet-no whip-one pump hazelnut-one pump caramel-macchiato-in a Venti cup-with added 2% milk? No problem! I won’t even comment on the fact that as a drink that doesn’t even make sense! Not only that, you mentioned to me in passing at the water cooler that your anniversary is coming up this weekend, but work got hectic and it slipped your mind. It happens. But with me in your employ it won’t be an issue because I’ve already sent flowers and made a reservation at that place you like.

  Reason Number 2: I Have No Life

As depressing as that sounds for me, it’s a serious win for you. As we’ve already covered, you now have a reservation courtesy of me at the place you like. But oh no! It’s Friday night and you can’t find a babysitter on short notice, luckily it’s Friday night so it’s not like I have any plans! I’m happy to be at your beck and call day and night because all joking aside I really don’t have anything better to do. I will be available to you no-questions-asked 24/7 during my employment term. What does “no-questions-asked” mean you say? Well, if for some reason you’re stuck on the side of the Capilano suspension bridge, your car is out of gas, you can’t find your wallet, and you're covered in Christmas decorations in mid June. No problem. I’ll be there in 10 with a change of clothes, and a jerrycan.

  Reason Number 3: My Attention to Detail

I can guarantee that my assigned work will be done with care, and not only that, I can guarantee that my attention to detail will help you in a number of other ways. For example, you need a tie that goes well with that shirt? Here are three good options. You need to pick out tile for the guest bathroom? Do the counter tops with this one, the floor with this, and use these as an accent. You need a nice date outfit? I just picked it up for you from the dry cleaners. You had a salad at lunch and want to know how to make the dressing? It’s olive oil with lemon juice, honey, Dijon mustard, basil, cayenne pepper, and Himalayan rock salt; yes I got all that from smelling it.

  Reason Number 4: I Haven’t Heard Any of Your Stories

At this point you’ve probably been working with the same people for a while, and someone might strangle you if they have to hear one more story about your cat Princess Claireabell IV and her adventures. I haven’t heard them, and yes I’d love to! If I could spend every lunch break hearing about Princess Claireabell IV I would. You have pictures? Of course you do and yes absolutely I want to see all 2,451 of them! Wait so you’re telling me that she just loves string? Well I love her already.

  Reason Number 5: My Ability to Grovel Sincerely

I would absolutely relish the opportunity to work for a great group of people and learn a new set of skills. Not only would I love to learn the job, I want to learn it from the best. Not just the best, the absolute best. I want to be envied by all others because of the amazing education I’m getting from people that are revered by their peers and society as a whole. I want to learn from people so bright that it’s difficult to look directly at them without sunglasses. In short, I want to learn from you.
