The funniest thing about working in an office with multiple people is that sometimes my colleagues are on the phone and I'm trying to figure out what the hell they're talking about djajdjs

i’m literally crying i’m so sad to be leaving this internship bc it’s the best work environment i’ve ever been in and the team is so nice. they said such nice things about me and gave me a card and a $100 amazon giftcard and im soooooooo !!!!!!!!! T____T it’s been an honor to serve the students and be a part of the UCSC community again and I can’t believe how hard this is hitting me emotionally.

It's my second to last day at internship and my department threw a surprise brunch in my honor and I'm all emotional!! (at UC Santa Cruz)

I love being able to do so much to help students and I never want this internship to be over T__T

Here’s what I did this week...

On Monday I spoke with the director of the EOP office on campus, who helps make funding decisions for Undocumented Student Services, about my policy proposal for hiring an on-campus paralegal/immigration attorney to create triage support for our undocumented students. He was into the idea but brought up the main thing I keep running into, which is obviously funding. However, he gave me the name of an alum who is an attorney and told me to get in touch with her as she might have ideas.

Yesterday, I called her. She told me she works with the Monterey County Bar Association and they do free legal consultation/immigration workshops monthly in Monterey and they could totally do them at UCSC. She gave me the number of the director of the MCBA and let me know that if we couldn’t work something out, she’d personally be willing to come meet with students and give the 45-minute presentation answering legal questions.

Today, I called the director of the Monterey County Bar Association. She told me that they would “love to” do it and would be willing to commit to once a month workshops, which would not only have that presentation answering questions but also allow students to meet one on one with law students to get assessed for legal aid and pro bono support. The cost would only be $500/mo and they said if our orgs can’t come up with that, they have orgs they can partner with that can. She also told me she’s going to an all day meeting tomorrow where she will be championing the head of the Santa Cruz Bar Association to get them involved. I’ll also help by sending along my advocacy piece to her and creating partnerships between these organizations.

Tonight, I’m speaking at the EOP student intern meeting and I get to tell them this great news and help brainstorm with them on where we can hold the space for it and what the next step is in terms of creating an even better support system for our DREAMers.

So basically. I did the thing. I used advocacy to make a thing happen and this is going to be an INVALUABLE resource for our students and I’m going to cry now.
